Standardized questionnaires

In addition to the visual monitoring of subjects during testing, clinical assessment can be accomplished by having the project physician interview each subject concerning symptoms, with a standard questionnaire immediately after exposure. Also, subjects can keep a record, on a standard form, of symptoms experienced during and after exposure. It is well to note here that caution should be exercised in interpreting symptoms, because these are unlikely to be blind studies. 

Standardized questionnaires are used to capture HRQL data in a variety of settings. These standardized questionnaires may be self-administered or completed via telephone or personal interview, by observation, or by postal survey. Two basic approaches to HRQL measurement are available generic instruments that provide a summary of health-related quality of fife and specific instruments that focus on problems associated with individual disease states, patient groups, or areas of function.

To assess the severity of the erectile dysfunction, the patient should be asked about onset and frequency. A standardized questionnaire, such as the International Index of Erectile Dysfunction, is often used. It includes 15 questions about the quality of erectile function and sexual intercourse (Fig. 81-3). The physician should carefully assess the patient s expectations and motivations for erectile function to ensure that they are reasonable. 

A panel of Macedonian experts in the field of epidemiology and microbiology has assessed the needs and priorities for disease surveillance using a standardized questionnaire. The blood withdrawal was done by trained personnel following a highly standardized procedure. The whole home visit usually took place within 10 minutes. A date for the second examination, at the practice of a local physician, was arranged. The second examination consisted of a standardized questionnaire and a physical examination, which included measurement of blood pressure, body height, and body weight.
