Special Tasks

The most frequently applied potentiometric measurements involve the determination and adjustment of the pH of different solutions, samples, reagents, reaction media, or buffers. [Pg.185]

As is well known, pH is used to characterize the acid base property of a sample. It is defined as the negative logarithm of the hydrogen ion activity (aH+)- Accordingly, it is a dimensionless number  [Pg.185]

Since the potential of selective potentiometric sensors is in a well-defined relationship with the activity of the detected ion, it is obvious that potentiometric electrodes can be used for pH measurements. The Nemst equation for the hydrogen ion is [Pg.185]

This means that the linear relationship exists between the electrode potential and the pH. Therefore, if we can find an electrode that shows Nernstian response to hydrogen ion activity, then measuring the E value and having reliable calibration data we can get the hydrogen ion activity and the pH of the tested solution. If and E are the electrode potentials in calibrating the standard and the sample, and pjjj and pjj are the pH of the standard and that of the sample, respectively, then we can easily get pjj, the unknown p of the sample solution. [Pg.185]

This looks simple however, in practice, there are several obstacles that make this approach not so straightforward. [Pg.186]

Developments in experimental and mathematical techniques in the 1970s have initiated an interest in the development of better laboratory reactors for catal5d ic studies. Besides the many publications on new reactors for general or special tasks, quite a few review articles have been published on the general subject of laboratory reactors for catalytic studies. [Pg.5]

The selection of the right gel-permeation chromatography (GPC) column or column combination for a special task is a multistage procedure. First, a decision about the type of column has to be made according to the polymer samples in question ... [Pg.429]

Practical application also requires knowledge of the weight-to-weight ratio because the amount of phosphonate needed for a special task is of economic interest. A commonly used method is the Hampshire test [307]. One to two grams of the product is solved in 100 ml of distilled water and then 10 ml of a sodium carbonate solution (2%) is added. This solution is titrated by 0.25 M solution of calcium acetate at pH 12 until permanent turbidity occurs [308], The best means for testing of commercial sequestrants is often to choose conditions of practical relevance because in practical applications a great many parameters have to be taken into account [309]. [Pg.618]

Program Capabilities The CBC program has the capability of performing a full range of standard drug discovery and development tasks, in addition to the more specialized tasks listed below. [Pg.370]

Design of apparatus extractors are more or less complicated constructions fitted to special tasks. The choice of material, calculation of stability, and technical production quality of the design are special tasks of the mechanical engineer. This book does not go into further detail about these aspects. [Pg.373]

If no standard methods exist or if they are not appropriate, laboratoiy developed or other non-standard methods that are suitable for the special task and which are validated can be used. Validation of methods is an important task in the laboratoiy (see chapter 11). [Pg.36]

Special tasks. Some lipids have adopted special roles in the body. Steroids, eicosanoids, and some metabolites of phospholipids have signaling functions. They serve as hormones, mediators, and second messengers (see p.370). Other lipids form anchors to attach proteins to membranes (see p.214). The lipids also produce cofactors for enzymatic reactions—e.g., vitamin K (see p.52) and ubiquinone (see p.l04). The carotenoid retinal, a light-sensitive lipid, is of central importance in the process of vision (see p.358). [Pg.46]

Foster-Miller has developed robotics technologies with applications to environmental remediation. These robots include FERRET, a materials handling robot Mini-Mucker, a remotely operated dump truck Lemming, a robot designed for the retrieval of unexploded ordnance and TALON, used for explosives detection and ordnance removal. Foster-MiUer can also custom-design robots for specialized tasks. Foster-MiUer s robotics technologies are commercially available. [Pg.597]

A large number of chemical/biological processes will be presented, modeled and efficient numerical techniques will be developed and programmed using MATLAB 2. This is a sophisticated numerical software package. MATLAB is powerful numerically through its built-in functions and it allows us to easily develop and evaluate complicated numerical codes that fulfill very specialized tasks. Our solution techniques will be developed and discussed from both the chemical/biological point of view and the numerical point of view. [Pg.3]

I hope that I have been able to demonstrate, with this small selection of our newest research results, what a variety of reaction possibilities the chemistry of transition metal carbene complexes display. In the following I review an area whose development we have made most recently our special task, namely that of transition metal-carbyne complexes. [Pg.21]

Proper instruction should be provided in the use of glass equipment designed for special tasks which might present unusual risks. For example, stoppered separating funnels containing volatile solvents can develop considerable pressure. [Pg.510]

The space probe is shaped like a huge sphere. Inside the sphere are a number of smaller, self-contained spheres, each of which holds machinery for specialized tasks. In the biggest of the interior spheres—let s call it the library —are the blueprints for making all the machines in the space probe. These are not ordinary blueprints, however. They can be thought of as blueprints in braille—or perhaps as sheet music for a player piano— where physical indentations in the blueprint cause a master machine to make the machine for which the blueprint codes. [Pg.104]

The initial procedures for the conduct of official OPCW proficiency tests have been developed by the Special Task Force on Analytical Issues in the period 1994 to 1996, and subsequently recommended for adoption through Working Group B to the Conference of States Parties the respective procedures were adopted by the First Conference of States Parties in May 1997 (5). The evaluation criteria have been further developed since, through consultation with participants in the proficiency-testing scheme. These consultations were often initiated by practical problems posed during individual proficiency tests. The numerous amended documents have recently been compiled into three comprehensive quality system documents that describe the process of the OPCW proficiency test, which has been accredited by the Dutch accreditation body in 2001 ... [Pg.91]

Instrumentation will include field instruments used in the manufacturing process and other instruments assoeiated with special tasks, such as that of monitoring laboratory or computer room environmental eonditions. The accessibility of instruments must be such as to permit their eleaning and maintenanee. Siting is also important, and instruments should be installed as close to the point of measurement as possible. The placement of flowmeters in piping dead-legs should be avoided. Careful consideration should also be given to the appropriate position of other instruments sueh as thermometers and thermocouples so that they, too, can fulfill their measurement and eontrol functions. Construction materials that come into direct contact with the pharmaceutical or healthcare production process stream must not contaminate or affect the manufactured product in any way. Instrument lubricants and coolants must not come into contact with in-process product or equipment. The reliability of instruments should also be considered for instance, a pressure transmitter that uses atmospheric pressure as its reference may suffer from poor reliability. A draft calibration schedule may also be prepared. [Pg.190]

Another important reductive method is the utilization of dissolving metal reagents. These reagents perform reduction with high selectivity and, by virtue of their individual properties, are of use in carrying out special tasks. ... [Pg.77]

Platelets are contractile blood elements with a specialized task in the arrest of bleeding. The fundamental mechanisms of this specific hmction involve adhesion, aggregation, internal contraction and secretion. Furthermore, the phospholipids present in the platelet membranes play a key role in the development of coagulation mechanisms. [Pg.342]

Today, the so-called gravity removal method is used only for special tasks. In this method, the steam enters the top part of the chamber and is distributed by a suitable sparger (theoretically on a uniform front). The air escapes through a large valve in the lower part of the chamber by way of two actions gravity and displacement by steam. This method is rather slow and unsuitable for porous and other loads that may trap air inside recessed cavities. [Pg.3533]
