Space Agencies

In 1982, the European Space Agency s Information Retrieval Service (ESA/IRS) introduced the ZOOM command, providing users with a mechanism to analy2e retrieved sets. In 1984, service at a baud rate of 2400 was made available by Tymnet and Telenet for pubHc access to on-line databases. In 1985, the first commercial CD-ROM drives for personal computers became available, along with the first commercial CD-ROM databases.

Developed to meet the simulation requirements of the European Space Agency used by such leading companies as British Gas, Lucas Aerospace, BNFL, British Aerospace. 

Physically, the MIMOS II Mossbauer spectrometer has two components that are joined by an interconnect cable the sensor head (SH) and electronics printed-circuit board (PCB). On MER, the SH is located at the end of the Instrument Deployment Device (IDD) and the electronics board is located in an electronics box inside the rover body. On Mars-Express Beagle-2, a European Space Agency (ESA) mission in 2003, the SH was mounted also on a robotic arm integrated to the Position... 

The instrument MIMOS II will be part of the upcoming ESA-NASA space missions ExoMars in 2018, and the Russian Space Agency sample return mission Phobos Grunt scheduled for launch in 2011 to visit the Mars moon Phobos.

The Venus Express spacecraft launched by the European Space Agency (ESA) in November 2005 reached its goal in April 2006. Its main purpose was to find out more about the (still not understood) super-rotation of the Venusian atmosphere, which causes clouds to circulate the planet in about four earth days. Venus takes 243 earth days to rotate about its own axis. 

Ice has been found at the poles new measurements of Mars southern polar region indicate the presence of extensive frozen water. The polar region contains enough frozen water to cover the whole planet with a layer of liquid approximately 36 ft deep. A joint NASA-Italian Space Agency instrument on the European Space Agency s Mars Express spacecraft provided these data (NASA press release, 15 March 2007). It must be assumed that volcanic exhalations contained large amounts of water.

Low-cost material programs include the European Union s 54 million sixth framework research program on nanotechnologies and nanosciences, knowledge-based multifunctional materials, new production processes and devices. In partnership with the European Space Agency (ESA), the 5-year project seeks to find catalysts less expensive than platinum, which is used widely in fuel cells. As an alternative to platinum, nickel, cobalt and copper alloys are a possible solution. 

The use of microwave beams to heat the oceans has also been studied. Some research suggests that microwave beams would be capable of deflecting the course of hurricanes. NASDA (Japan s national space agency) has been researching this area and plans to launch an experimental satellite of 10-kW to 1-MW. Japan plans to assemble a space-based solar array by 2040.

By their very definition, the sky sciences are an open area. It was international partnerships within the European astrophysical community that opened the way to economic and political unification. Indeed, Europe began in the sky, with the foundation of the European Southern Observatory (ESO) and the European Space Agency (ESA), and today, astrophysical conferences have become planetary events. We can only rejoice ...
