Known as Scisearch in its on-line version, the Science Citation Index has become an important information retrieval tool in the second half of the twentieth century. It has also become a popular tool for hihliometric studies of various sorts, such as attempts to measure the relative impact of research carried out by different individuals or organizations, or the relative impact of pubHcations in different journals. [Pg.58]

One of the main attractions of normal mode analysis is that the results are easily visualized. One can sort the modes in tenns of their contributions to the total MSF and concentrate on only those with the largest contributions. Each individual mode can be visualized as a collective motion that is certainly easier to interpret than the welter of information generated by a molecular dynamics trajectory. Figure 4 shows the first two normal modes of human lysozyme analyzed for their dynamic domains and hinge axes, showing how clean the results can sometimes be. However, recent analytical tools for molecular dynamics trajectories, such as the principal component analysis or essential dynamics method [25,62-64], promise also to provide equally clean, and perhaps more realistic, visualizations. That said, molecular dynamics is also limited in that many of the functional motions in biological molecules occur in time scales well beyond what is currently possible to simulate. [Pg.165]

Strength and Stiffness. Thermoplastic materials are viscoelastic which means that their mechanical properties reflect the characteristics of both viscous liquids and elastic solids. Thus when a thermoplastic is stressed it responds by exhibiting viscous flow (which dissipates energy) and by elastic displacement (which stores energy). The properties of viscoelastic materials are time, temperature and strain rate dependent. Nevertheless the conventional stress-strain test is frequently used to describe the (short-term) mechanical properties of plastics. It must be remembered, however, that as described in detail in Chapter 2 the information obtained from such tests may only be used for an initial sorting of materials. It is not suitable, or intended, to provide design data which must usually be obtained from long term tests. [Pg.18]

Function event trees are developed to represent the plant s response to each initiator. The function event tree is not an end product it is an intermediate step that provides a baseline of information and permits a stepwise approach to sorting out the complex relationships between potential initiating events and the response of the mitigating features. They structure plant respoases to accident conditions - possibly as time sequences.
