CH2Br COOH. White crystalline solid, m.p. 50"C, b.p. 208 C. Soluble in water and alcohol. Prepared by the action of dry bromine on dry ethanoic acid in presence of small amounts of red phosphorus. Produces sores upon the skin used in chemical syntheses. See Reformatski reaction. 

Soreness which may follow ver minor accidents to the eye may he relieved bv placing i drop of castor oil in the corner of the eye. 

This method was designed to produce an acetyl intermediate just like that in the failed recipe a few paragraphs above using only sulfuric acid and acetonitrile [93]. Nicotinamide can also be toxic to cells at concentrations that increase the NAD levels above normal. Individuals consuming nicotinamide at levels of 3 g/d for extended periods (3—36 months) have experienced various side effects such as heartburn, nausea, headaches, hives, fatigue, sore throat, dry hair, and tautness of the face (1). 

In 1912, however, (201) it was discovered that espundia (American mucocutaneous leishmaniasis) can be cured by tartar emetic. It was soon learned that kala-a2ar (visceral leishmaniasis) and oriental sore (a cutaneous form of the disease occurring in the Middle East) also respond to antimonial therapy, especially when compounds of pentavalent antimony are employed. Treatment of leishmaniasis with the latter type of antimonials is safe and effective in over 90% of the cases (202). In 1918, it was demonstrated that tartar emetic is of value in the treatment of schistosomiasis (203). Pentavalent antimonials proved to be less effective. The introduction of antimony compounds for the treatment of parasitic diseases is undoubtedly one of the important milestones in the history of therapeutics (see Antiparasitic agents). 

What has become an even greater concern in recent years is the phenomenon known as multiple chemical sensitivity disorder triggered by exposures to many chemicals in the environment. Synthetic chemicals are all around us. They are in the products we use, in the clothes we wear, in the food we eat, in the air we breathe at work. Because chemicals are everywhere in the environment, it is not possible to escape exposure. For this reason many people have become sensitized to the chemicals around them. In fact, it is estimated that 15% of the population has become sensitized to common household and commercial products. For some people the sensitization is not too serious a problem. They may have what appears to be a minor allergy to one or more chemicals. Other people are much more seriously affected. They may feel tired all the time, and suffer from mental confusion, breathing problems, sore muscles, and a weakened immune system. Such people suffer from a condition known as Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS). 

Umbellatine was examined by Gupta and Kahali, who found that it killed Paramoecium at 1 in 500 and Leishmania tropica at 1 in 50,000, but did not inhibit L. donovani or Entamoeba histolytica at 1 in 10,000. It remembles berberine in the nature and range of its pharmacological activity but is more active in producing cardiovascular response and is possibly more potent in the treatment of oriental sore.

Many athletes rely on NSAIDs to help with pain and soreness. 

Carboxylic acids vary considerably in strength. Among the strongest is trichloroacetic acid (Ka = 0.20) a 0.10 M solution of C13C—COOH is about 73% ionized. Trichloroacetic acid is an ingredient of over-the-counter preparations used to treat canker sores and remove warts. 

Acute infection with Hetpes simplex viruses (HSV) results in painful rashes on skin and mucous membranes. HSV-1 mainly causes cold sores around the mouth (hetpes labialis) or eyes (keratitis), whereas infection by HSV-2 mostly results in sores in the genital or anal area. Less frequently, HSV also causes severe infections in newborns or potentially fatal encephalitis. HSV remains latent and can be reactivated by stress, suppression of the immune system or other infections. 

Influenza is an acute viral disease caused by Influenza A (sporadic, epidemic, and pandemic) or B (sporadic outbreaks) virus. Symptoms typically occur suddenly and include high fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, sore throat, and malaise. Serious complications can be caused by bacterial superinfection of the respiratory tract.
