Solvents cellulosics

Cellulose esters of unsaturated acids, such as the acetate methacrylate, acetate maleate (34), and propionate crotonate (35), have been prepared. They are made by treating the hydrolyzed acetate or propionate with the corresponding acyl chloride in a pyridine solvent. Cellulose esters of unsaturated acids are cross-linkable by heat or uv light solvent-resistant films and coatings can be prepared from such esters. [Pg.251]

In petroleum and oxygenate finish removers, the major ingredient is normally acetone, methyl elliyl ketone, or toluene. Cosolvcnts include methanol, n-butanol, sec-butyl alcohol, or xylene. Sodium hydroxide or amines are used to activate the remover. Paraffin wax is used as an evaporadon retarder though its effectiveness is limited because it is highly soluble in the petroleum solvents. Cellulose thickeners are sometimes added to liquid formulas to assist in pulling the paraffin wax from the liquid to form a vapor barrier or to make a thick formula. Corrosion inhibitors are added to stabilize the formula for packaging (qv). [Pg.1195]

The derivatives of cellulose esters exhibit the lyotropic cholesteric phase in many solvents. Cellulose is less rigid than PBG. The persistence length of PBG is about 2000 A while the latter is between 130 and 330 A, depending on the chemical formula of the substitute and the solvent. The cellulose derivatives are cheap in cost and easy to process, and hence were studied extensively. Among the derivatives, hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) is one of most well studied. [Pg.323]

Butanol [ 71-36-3] (1 -butanol) is a colorless neutral liquid that has a limited miscibility with water and a characteristic odor. It is miscible with organic solvents. Butanol has a high solvency for most known natural and synthetic resins, fats, oils, linseed oil, saturated polyesters, and poly(vinyl acetate). It considerably increases the dilutability of cellulose nitrate solutions with non-solvents. Cellulose esters, cellulose ethers, chlorinated rubber, poly(vinyl chloride), vinyl chloride copolymers, and polystyrene are not dissolved by butanol. [Pg.355]
