Figure 9.14. The hourly scan pattern of COBE, WMAP and Planck from left to right. In each panel the anti-solar direction is in the center, and plus signs denote the North and South ecliptic poles. An equiangular azimuthal projection is used. COBE scanned this area in one orbit of about 103 minutes, WMAP scans its pattern every hour, while Planck spends several hours integrating on one scan circle of radius 70° radius shown offset from anti-Sun by a 15° precession angle. The remaining 19.1% of the energy required to split water has to be supplied for the production step. Figure 4 depicts the terrestrial solar direct normal spectral irradiance distribution computed using SMARTS version 2.9.2 model with input file from ASTM Standard Table G 173-03. ... [Pg.25]

Selenium exhibits both photovoltaic action, where light is converted directly into electricity, and photoconductive action, where the electrical resistance decreases with increased illumination. These properties make selenium useful in the production of photocells and exposure meters for photographic use, as well as solar cells. Selenium is also able to convert a.c. electricity to d.c., and is extensively used in rectifiers. Below its melting point selenium is a p-type semiconductor and is finding many uses in electronic and solid-state applications. [Pg.96]

As described in the chapter on band structures, these calculations reproduce the electronic structure of inhnite solids. This is important for a number of types of studies, such as modeling compounds for use in solar cells, in which it is important to know whether the band gap is a direct or indirect gap. Band structure calculations are ideal for modeling an inhnite regular crystal, but not for modeling surface chemistry or defect sites. [Pg.319]

The discovery of chemical N2 fixation under ambient conditions is more compatible with a simple, complementary, low temperature and low pressure system, possibly operated electrochemically and driven by a renewable energy resource (qv), such as solar, wind, or water power, or other off-peak electrical power, located near or in irrigation streams. Such systems might produce and apply ammonia continuously, eg, directly in the rice paddy, or store it as an increasingly concentrated ammoniacal solution for later appHcation. In fact, the Birkeland-Eyde process of N2 oxidation in an electric arc has been... [Pg.92]

A photovoltaic (PV) solar power system is a complete electrical source that uses solar cells to directly convert light energy into electricity. The system can be self-contained and completely autonomous or it can work in tandem with other conventional fuel-based sources of power to offer robust power availabihty. [Pg.466]

The photogenerated current is in the same direction as /, but is always less than because the battier potential under load conditions is always less than F, which results in a larger flow of majority carriers than that in a short-circuited cell. Thus, when a solar cell is under load, the current and voltage are always less than and lU, respectively this condition is the curve-factor loss. Depending on the characteristics of the particularp—n junction and on the cell operating conditions, there is an optimal load resistance that maximizes the power output of the cell, ie, the product of its current and voltage. [Pg.469]

Unlike solar thermal systems or PV concentrator systems, the PV flat plate systems work well in cloudy locations because these latter convert diffuse as well as direct sunlight to electricity. On an aimualized basis, the energy produced by a photovoltaic array varies by only about 25% from an average value for the contiguous 48 states of the United States. As a result, it is practical to use photovoltaic systems in normally cloudy locations such as Seattle or northern Maine. [Pg.236]

The estimated world production of tellurium from 1991—1994 is shown in Table 4 the average annual production in that time period was 240 tonnes. The data for 1994 are considered to be the most accurate because of the direct reporting, for the first time, of production from plants in the former Soviet Union. The main uses for tellurium are as a free machining additive in ferrous metallurgy (55%), as a free machining additive in nonferrous metallurgy (10%), in chemicals (30%), in electrical appHcations such as solar cells and thermoelectrics (3%), and miscellaneous (2%). [Pg.387]

A = area of the enclosure that i.s exposed to the sun. We have assumed about 50% of the surface area falling outdoors which is exposed to direct solar radiation. [Pg.941]

In fact, it is the solar effect that is causing the maximum heat. The factors considered for the solar effect are also highly conservative. Nevertheless, a canopy over the outdoor part is advisable in the above case. This will ensure the same size of enclosure for the outdoor as well as the indoor parts and also eliminate the requirement for a thicker enclosure or a forced cooling arrangement. Now there will be no direct solar radiation over the bus system and the total solar effect can be eliminated, except for substituting the indoor ambient temperature of 48 C with the maximum outdoor temperature for the outdoor part of the bus system. [Pg.948]

Much attention is also being given to solar energy. It does not appear that direct solar heat is economically feasible as a large power plant energy source however, this resource has great potential for a number of process and heating applications. [Pg.7]
