Slicing machines

Purification.—Tfte Cutting Machine.—When a visitor enters the works of the Gutta-Percha Gompany, he observes in the yard or court the imported blocks of the raw material piled in great heaps. These blocks, when they are required for use, are first taken from the heaps to the cutting or slicing machine, which is a large solid vertical disc of iron, armed on one Fig. SOI. 

Beet Slicing Machines —The cutting machine consists of a horizontal disc 4 to 6 feet in diameter on a vertical axis, and making 80 to 100 revolutions per minute. In the disc are a series of 8 to 14 apertures, into which fit the knife-holders on which the knives are screwed. Pick-up adhesives bond the tissue to the Kraft paper tube. Depending on the machine systems the following adhesives are used If the adhesive is applied directly to the tube by a slice (machine speed up to 400 m/min), aqueous colloidal solution systems at room temperature are normally used. If the adhesive is applied directly to the tube by a nozzle (machine speed up to 450 m/min), aqueous polyol-based adhesives are often used at room temperature. 

Subsequent to stock preparation and proper dilution, the paper furnish usually is fed to the paper machine through one or more screens or other devices to remove dirt and fiber bundles. It then enters a flow spreader which provides a uniform flowing stream and which is the width of the paper machine. The flow spreader, or manifold, discharges the slurry into a headbox, where fiber flocculation is minimised by microturbulence and where the proper pressure head is provided to cause the slurry to flow at the proper velocity through the slice and onto the moving Fourdrinier wire. 

Honeycomb core. Honeycomb core used for aluminum bonded sandwich structure is exclusively aluminum. The core is fabricated by printing offset stripes of adhesive (the node adhesive) on aluminum foil, stacking a large number of these foils and then curing the adhesive in a heated press. To implement the Doppler-selected TOF measurement, the initial relative velocity is arranged to be parallel to the propagation vector of the probe laser. This critical configuration can readily be achieved in this rotating sources machine.36 Under this configuration, each Doppler-sliced 2D distribution exhibits a cylindrical symmetry The slit in front of the TOF spectrometer allows only those products with a rather small vx to be detected. Hence, only the -distribution, obtained by the TOF measurement, is needed to completely characterize the Doppler-sliced 2D (vx — vy) distribution.

Ascorbic acid retention in some fresh-cut produce is affected by the nature of the slicing method used (Lee and Kader 2000). Higher levels of ascorbic acid were retained in samples that had been prepared by manually tearing the lettuce into strips. Lettuce shredded using a sharp knife initially retained 18% less ascorbic acid than the torn samples. The retention of ascorbic acid in the products sliced by machine was 25-63% lower than that in lettuce shredded by manual tearing. Using a blunt machine blade resulted in 10% lower ascorbic acid levels than when a sharp blade was used (Barry-Ryan and O Beirne 1999). Losses in ascorbic acid occur when vegetables are severely cut or shredded (Lee and Kader 2000). 

Typical cycles in software development might include feasibility study, GUI mock-up, requirements analysis and prototype, single-user, single-machine vertical incremental slices, tightening of relations between documentation layers, distribution across hosts, and multiuser deployment. A typical 10-person software development might use cycles ranging from two to six weeks. 

Early user cycles need not build on the technical architecture instead, treat them as prototypes that will yield early feedback from users. These cycles—vertical slices of user-visible functionality—are focused on correct visible functional behavior at the user interfaces. They might be implemented purely as a single-machine, single-process prototype. 

Microscopic analysis. From each experimental group of specimens with incipient lesions, two specimens were selected randomly for microscopic analysis. Two adjacent slices (500 pm thickness) were prepared from each specimen with a diamond wire sectioning machine (model 3242, Well, Le Lode, Switzerland). The slices were fixed in 1.0 ml 4% paraformaldehyde, 1% glutardialdehyde in 0.1 M sodium cacodylate buffer, pH 7.4, for one week. One slice of each pair was subsequently demineralized in 2.0 ml 0.1 M acetic acid, 2.5% glutardialdehyde, pH 4.0.

Like the monoamine hypothesis of depression, such a simple hypothesis was appeaUng but, perhaps predictably, a Uttle too simple to be true. Further research using a technique known as positron emission tomography (PET) showed the relationship between dopamine and schizophrenia is more complex. PET detects radioactive emissions of certain isotopes these isotopes are incorporated into a molecule and injected into a patient. The machine measures the radioactivity with detectors positioned aroimd the body. PET lets researchers study the distribution of certain molecules in Uving tissue since, imUke autoradiography, the tissue is not sliced and treated chemically. The amoimt of radioactivity must be small, however, to avoid harming the human subjects. 

Ingots of EGS are evaluated for resistivity, crystal perfection, and mechanical and physical properties, such as size and mass. The ingots are sliced into wafers using at least 10 machining and polishing procedures. These wafers are sliced sequentially from the ingot, and evaluated for the correct surface orientation, thickness, taper, and bow. As a final procedure, the wafers are chemically cleaned to remove surface contaminants prior to use. 

When the beets to be analysed are already in slices, these are pulped by a mincing or other machine or by the Pellet press. 

These may be either fresh or dried. The former are prepared for analysis by reducing them to a pulp by means of the machines used for the non-exhausted slices the latter are ground to a fine powder. As a rule only the sugar in these products is determined, but in some cases also the water.
