Personal-care market

In the personal care market, fatty acid derivatives of proteins and amino acids (glutamic acid) are mainly used in mild shower and bath products, mild shampoos, surfactant-based face cleansers, cold-wave preparations and fixatives, baby wash formulations, as well as special emulsifiers for leave-on products. 

A century ago, the personal care market consisted of just toilet soaps and tooth powder but, today, the consumer is offered a plethora of choices, with a product for every conceivable task. To illustrate this point, the major categories of personal care products available in the U.S. market are shown in Figure 1.11. 

Alpha Packaging manufactures botdes and jars made from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) for the pharmaceutical, nutritional and personal care markets. Technologies used include injection blow moulding, injection stretch blow moulding, and extrusion blow moulding. Alpha manufactures stock and custom containers in a variety of styles and colours. 

Use of rice bran oil grows as a specialty ingredient in the cosmetic/personal care market. The demand is for natural, value-added healthy ingredients (60). 

Functional Chemicals detergents, additives for detergents, intermediates for the personal care market, specialty chemicals for the construction, mining and petroleum industries ... 

With the increasing demand for skin care and repair products, the personal care market is evolving toward even milder, essentially nonirritating cleansing formulations. To design such skin-compatible compounds, it is only natural to attempt to imitate the functional characteristics of the biochemical surfactants, phospholipids. The phosphocholine moiety is the most common hydrophilic group, usually coupled to a diglyceride hydrophobe unit as in lecithin, a phospholipid commercially extracted from egg and soybean products. 

The main reason for the declining quantities in the total is new formulations in the personal care market, in which, especially in leave-on products, alkanolamides from MEA are limited to 10% (for details, see Refs 3 and 4). 

Silicone compounds which have a Si-OH bond are referred to as silanols. These compounds are also referred to as dimethiconol in the personal care market. Silanols (Si-OH) are very different from carbanols (CH2-OH) in that the former easily undergo condensation reactions to form higher-molecular-weight silanols and water. Carbanols do not undergo this reaction readily, since the resulting compounds will be ethers. Silanols conform to the following structure ... 

In the United States, Ecolab dominates the I I sector. With a market share of more than 30 percent, it easily outdoes the number-two player, Diversey. Spartan Chemical is another big contender. Dial (Henkel), Purell (Gojo), and Gold Bond are topselling brands in the personal cleanser and sanitizer market. Overall, in the personal-care market, private-label brands are by far the leader at mass merchandisers, with sales of 73.9 million in 2009. 

Disposable diapers and incontinence pads for the personal care market are rapidly improving. Currently, this market is seeing low growth in areas like the United States and Western Europe, where penetration levels are high and birth rates substantially lower compared to developing countries. 

The importance of smart packaging in the health, beauty, and personal care markets is greater than in almost any other sector. The drivers in the cosmetic sector include, e.g., faster non-messy delivery, easy to open, read, and dispense, pocket-friendly, and communication capable devices. Health products drivers are patient compliance, security, better-tailored information, and health in the home.
