In the course of his career, the plant engineer will be a party to a contract. His employment is a contract between himself and his employer unless he is self-employed. What is a contract A contract is an agreement between at least two parties to a matter. The important aspect is that the agreement is to the same thing. This is known as consensus ad idem, and follows an offer, which is accepted. An invitation to bid is not an offer, the offer being made by the bidder in submitting his bid. Once it has been established that you may set up an individual retirement account, you must consider the maximum amount of contributions which can be made under this type of plan. The contribution limitations are 1500 or 15% of your earned income, whichever is less. For these type of plans, earned income is defined as wages, salaries, professional fees, and self-employment income. It does not, however, include earnings from property, such as interest, dividends, or rents. These latter types of earnings are considered passive income and cannot be considered in calculating the amount of contribution which may be made. [Pg.105]

You should be aware that if you are involved in two or more situations, you could be an employee in one and an independent contractor in another. As an employee, both social security tax and income tax are withheld from your salary. As an independent contractor, you must estimate your income tax and social security tax liability and pay it in advance quarterly installments. Therefore, until the end of the year the amount withheld on salary will generally exceed the amount paid in by the independent contractor, and based solely on the value of the use of money, an independent contractor theoretically saves the interest on this difference. Also, for 1976 the amount of social security withheld from your salary is 5.85% of the first 15,300, but the amount of social security tax an independent contractor must pay is 7.9% of the first 15,300 of self-employment income. This difference in percentages can result in a maximum of 313 savings for the employee over the independent contractor. [Pg.108]
