Although schizophrenia is the commonest and best known psychotic illness, it is not synonymous with psychosis but is just one of many causes of psychosis. Schizophrenia affects 1% of the population, and in the United States there are over 300,000 acute schizophrenic episodes annually. Between 25 and 50% of schizophrenia patients attempt suicide, and 10% eventually succeed, contributing to a mortality rate eight times as high as that of the general population. In the United States over 20% of all Social Security benefit days are used for the care of schizophrenic patients. The direct and indirect costs of schizophrenia in the United States alone are estimated to be in the tens of billions of dollars every year. 

If you plan to earn income after retiring, you need to look carefully at the net effect of your earnings on your overall tax bill and plan your income to minimize any adverse effect. In addition to the graduated schedule of federal and state income taxes, consider the effect of earnings on Social Security benefits and the cost of self-employment tax. 

Earned income may affect your eligibility for Social Security benefits. If you are at full retirement age or older, there is no earnings limitation. But, if you retire before reaching full retirement age, your benefits are reduced when your annual earned income exceeds the appropriate limit. 

There are costs associated with working in retirement. When the loss of Social Security benefits and the cost of taxes are taken into account, it may not be worth it. 

It s fairly easy to assess your current financial condition. However, it becomes more difficult the further into the future you must look. There are a number of unpredictable factors to consider the rate of inflation, changes in tax laws, your health, how long you will live, return on investments, health care costs, and changes in Social Security benefits. 

If you plan to retire before you re eligible for immediate Social Security benefits, you need to provide additional savings to help meet your income needs until you qualify for Social Security. Typically, those retiring before age 62 find it to their advantage to begin drawing benefits at age 62, or the earliest age at which they qualify. For workers born before 1938, age-62 benefits are 80 percent of the age-65 full benefits. Workers born in 1938 and later qualify for full benefits at a later age.

Schizophrenia accounts for about 40% of mental health hospital beds and about 15% of all hospital beds. The costs to society are staggering 19 billion per year in the United States for direct costs (hospitalization, physician and therapist services, and medications) and 46 billion in indirect costs (disability, lost productivity, etc.). It accounts for 2.5% of all U.S. health costs and about 20% of the total days of Social Security benefits. 

In principle, there is no distinction between active measures applied to recipients of different types of social security benefits. Initiatives to facilitate entry into the labour market for social assistance recipients, unemployment benefit recipients and sick benefit recipients are meant to be similar even though the unemployed belong in different systems depending on the unemployment insurance and the reasons for the lack of job. 

In 2005/2006, about GBP140.6 billion was spent on social security benefits in GB accounting for 26.9% of total government expenditure. Approximately 30 million people in the UK - over half the total population - receive income from at least one social security benefit. The largest group of beneficiaries are over state pension age but about a third of social security expenditure is claimed by people of working age. 

To encourage the healthy older person to continue working beyond 65 years, legislation was passed to remove the penalty (in workers 65-70 years) of the loss of 1 for every 3 earned from Social Security benefits in the US. In 1999 it was... 

Safety professionals often encounter the Social Security Act when employees incur non-work-related debilitating injuries or illnesses or an anployee is killed off of the job. Safety professionals should be aware that there is a formal application process to the Social Security Administration, and social security benefits are not automatically paid to impaired individuals. Safety professionals shonld be aware that if the claim is denied by the Social Security Administration, there is an extensive administrative appeals process established with the Social Security Act, as well as potential appeal to the federal court system after all administrative appeals are exhausted.

There are two primary questions retirees must answer when deciding when to begin Social Security benefits ... 

Since the husband and wife are 63 and 60, respectfully, and continue to work, these amounts will likely increase until they actually decide to begin receiving their Social Security benefits. Be mindful that if either or both decide to begin their benefits before tiieir FRA is reached, their Social Security will be subject to an earnings test, which could reduce or even eliminate the benefit entirely. This is an excellent reason for waiting until you at least reach your FRA or until you stop working, whichever is sooner. 

I think it is necessary to look at detailed considerations, particularly the level of benefits that the injured man gets, before deciding that one system is preferable to another. I think there are countries where the level of social security benefits is higher than in the UK. There are certainly countries where the level of benefits is much lower. A big increase in social security benefits is a desirable ideal but many people and governments would not be happy to meet the cost of it. 

Social security benefits must inevitably be far lower than the loss that an injured man suffers.
