The garments used in clean areas shall be smooth, free from static charge, and shedding no fibres and particulate matters. They shall be loose and comfortable, fabric edges shall be sewed up and seams, sealed on the inside, and there shall be no unnecessary tucks and belts. The hair, beard and feet shall be completely enclosed by garments of the aseptic area, and the particles shed by the body shall also be retained. 

Adhesives in both paste and film form have been used to attach and seal ceramic or metal lids to cavity packages that may also be ceramic or metal. These packages cannot be considered hermetic in the sense that seam-sealed, welded, or soldered fids are, but they are adequate for most commercial and consumer electronics where extreme moisture-temperature environments are not encountered. Packages sealed with Epo-Tek H77 epoxy adhesive are reported to provide near-hermetic sealing of hybrid microcircuits, integrated-circuit devices, and MEM packages withstand 100 hours of 95% relative humidity."... 

If Noah really did build an ark, the seams had to be sealed to keep out the water. And early human beings must have floated their possessions across bodies of water in bark or leaf containers with the seams sealed with sticky, waterproof materials. 

Apart from underbody coating (usually PVC based), which is not explained further, the majority of bonding and sealing products in the paint shop are also PVC compounds. Acrylate plastisols are not often used and polyurethane-based sealants are rarely found. The main applications are in seam sealing and antiflutter bonding. On a small scale there are adhesive applications to bond and seal caps and to fix sound deadeners. In addition, foams and butyls as well as bituminous or acrylic-based sealants are used to fill car body holes.

Seam-sealing tape is the most recognized form of heat-activated adhesive. This is applied in film form, and heat is used to activate or liquefy the polymer. On cooling of the seam under pressure, the adhesive goes from a molten liquid to a cohesive solid, and a strong bond is formed. 

In the past, cans used for storing foods had seams sealed with lead solder. Because of the health hazard of lead from solder migrating into the food inside the cans, in 1982 U. S. manufacturers voluntarily stopped using lead solder in baby formula cans. By November 1991, they stopped the practice for all food products. ... 

Sikaflex -529 is multifunctional and combines sealing and bonding. In the repair market, car body assemblies can be seam sealed. The adhesive can be sprayed or lied with a bmsh. It can be over-painted which provides for perfect appearance. 

Robots are used to dispense adhesives and sealants throughout the automotive industry today. Automation requirements will be examined for windshield bonding to the vehicle, door manufacturing, passenger compartment interior seam sealing, and the application of sealants during the buildup of the vehicle body. These account for the vast majority of robotic sealant and adhesive dispensing applications in the automotive industry.

Robotic sealing in the body shop, like seam sealing and door assembly, is performed to seal out dust and moisture while protecting weld locations from corrosion due to the galvanization being burned off. The bead dispensed is nominally a 0.160-0.200 in. diameter, at velocities that approach 20 in./second. The robotic systems used in this system are similar to Fig. 1. 

Seam sealing is another application which is familiar to all bodyshops, but the attention that has been paid to this apparently minor detail has made a significant difference to vehicle life. We all know the speed with which water and road salts can creep into seams and cause corrosion. Effective polyurethane sealing will prevent this and is essential for warranty coverage and resale value [49]. 

Packaging companies and end-users demands of flexible barrier packaging performance is strongly increasing. These two-dimensional web-based materials must have the fundamental properties not only to protect product quality but also to enhance the appearance of some of the world s most recognized consumer brands. Secure seam seals and the scuff resistant adhesion of graphics on the product packaging are critical for both the consumer and brand owner.
