The dual seal is good to control the environment inside the seal without diluting the pumped product. It works with re-circulated barrier fluid. It establishes a barrier between the pumped fluid and the environment (Figure 14-20). 

Very High Pressures Use balanced o-ring cartridge seals up to about 500 psi. Above 500 psi use the tandem double seal with the barrier fluid pressurized at / the seal chamber pressure. Remember as pressure goes up the o-rings will extrude and metal parts will distort. Use a torsion balanced seal.

Pressurized external barrier fluid reservoir supplying clean fluid to the seal chamber. Circulation is by an internal pumping ring. Reservoir pressure is greater than the process pressure being sealed. 

The use of a back-up secondary seal may offer additional security against release. A steam flush, or another barrier fluid, offers a higher level of security. 

The barrier fluid concept for a two-seal arrangement in theory might overcome the problems of detection failure and non-cleanability. The lifetime and the reliability of the seal could be reduced due to the barrier fluid. For example, a constant steam trace might reduce the seal lifetime compared with the normal sterilisation cycles of the single seal arrangement. The concept of every seal being steam traced is a frightening prospect both economically and operationally.

Recent developments and adaptations of high-speed seal technology have brought gas barrier seals into mixer applications. With a gas such as nitrogen as the barrier fluid, process contamination is virtnally eliminated, and a pressure monitor can be used to detect leaks. The problem is that gas is a poor lubricant for the seal surfaces. However, by machining swirls or pockets in the inside surface of the seal faces, gas pressure can be raised locally to lift the seal surfaces apart. 

Emerson Gumming, Inc. eventuaUy bought the rights to the Sohio process and produced a variety of microspheres. Union Carbide was Hcensed to produce the phenoHc microspheres offered under the name PhenoHc MicrobaUoons (Table 16). When PhenoHc MicrobaUoons are introduced into a cmde-oU storage tank, they form a fluid seal that rises and faUs with the level of the oU. A continuous vapor-barrier seal is formed, which reduces evaporational losses up to 90%. Tests have been conducted under various mechanical and weather conditions and with cmde oUs of varying vapor pressure. 

Pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) based on acrylic, natural rubber and silicone are employed primarily for ease of application. To name Just a few applications, PSAs bond decals to surfaces, interior decorative surfaces to interior panels, interior trim pieces in place directly or hook and loop tape for the same purpose, structural shims in place during manufacturing and acoustic (sound deadening) materials to body skin interior surfaces. Tape products with pressure-sensitive adhesive on one or both surfaces are used for such functions as cargo compartment sealing, as a fluid barrier to prevent spills and leaks in the lavatories and... 

Grouted barriers use a variety of fluids injected into a rock or soil mass, which is set in place to reduce water flow and strengthen the formation. Grouted barriers are seldom used for containing groundwater flow in unconsolidated materials around hazardous waste sites because they cost more and have lower permeability than bentonite slurry walls. Nevertheless, they are suited to sealing voids in rock for waste sites remediation. 

The purchaser will specify the characteristics of the barrier or buffer fluid. Where the required flow, pressure, and temperature are factors, they shall be jointly established by the vendor and the seal manufacturer and shall be noted on the data sheets. When dual seals (as in Items b and c above) are provided, the barrier or buffer fluid shall be circulated by means of a circulating device such as a pumping ring or a flow-through system from an external source (see Appendix D). 

PP is often combined with PE to achieve desirable properties from both compounds. Commonly selected for its strength, resiliency, and gas/water impermeability, PP commonly constitutes closures and seals. Bags for packaging intravenous fluids are often manufactured from PP stock. Although not commonly utilized in the U.S.A., PP can also be used as a moisture barrier as one layer of a blister pack film. As with all plastics, though, manufacturers of PP should assure users that no additives leach out of the PP resin into the pharmaceutical preparation and quality testing specifications are contained in the USPp ...
