Fluid seals

Emerson Gumming, Inc. eventuaUy bought the rights to the Sohio process and produced a variety of microspheres. Union Carbide was Hcensed to produce the phenoHc microspheres offered under the name PhenoHc MicrobaUoons (Table 16). When PhenoHc MicrobaUoons are introduced into a cmde-oU storage tank, they form a fluid seal that rises and faUs with the level of the oU. A continuous vapor-barrier seal is formed, which reduces evaporational losses up to 90%. Tests have been conducted under various mechanical and weather conditions and with cmde oUs of varying vapor pressure. [Pg.308]

Interna] and External Seals Mechanical seals are classified broadly as internal or external. Internal seals (Fig. 10-112) are installed with all seal components exposed to the fluid sealed. The advantages of this arrangement are (1) the ability to seal against high pressure, since the hydrostatic force is normally in the same direction as the spring force (2) protection of seal parts from external mechanical damage and (3) reduction in the shaft length required. [Pg.941]

The plant consists of a box A, divided into three compartments by the partitions B, which, however, do not touch the bottom of the box A. On the floor of this box there is a layer of mercury, which is of siafficient depth to make a fluid seal between the compartments. In the two end compartments there are carhon electrodes, connected to a positive electric supply, while in... [Pg.142]

Note When the pump is on the test stand and water is used as the test fluid, seal leakage does not necessarily indicate seal performance under the specified operating conditions. Factors such as test fluid, pressure, temperature, and system cleanliness have an appreciable effect on seal leakage. [Pg.53]

Since perfluoroelastomer parts are primarily used in fluid sealing environments, it is essential to pay attention to seal design parameters, especially as they relate to the mechanical properties of the elastomeric material being used. The sealing performance depends on the stability of the material in the fluid, its mechanical properties, mechanical design, and installation of the seal.57... [Pg.113]

The snail-shaped cochlea, located in the temporal bone of the skull, contains a bony labyrinth and a membranous labyrinth. The bony labyrinth consists of the otic capsule (the external shell) and the modiolus (the internal axis). The membranous labyrinth, coiled inside the bony labyrinth, consists of three adjacent tubes the scala vestibuli, the scala media, and the scala tympani (O Figure 4-1). The scala vestibuli and the scala media are separated by Reissner s membrane the scala media and the scala tympani are separated by the basilar membrane and part of the osseous spiral lamina. The scala vestibuli and the scala tympani are filled with perilymph, a fluid whose ionic composition is similar to that of cerebrospinal fluid. The fluid sealed inside the scala media, the endolymph, contains a high concentration of potassium. [Pg.94]
