The use of the modelling-based strategy above described was investigated from an action research perspective by one of us (PF) who was the chemistiy teacher of a first grade medium level school class of 26 students (14-15 years old) in Brazil.

Increases in cocaine use, from 0.4 per cent (annual prevalence) in 2001 to 0.7 per cent in 2005, have been reported in household surveys conducted in Brazil. School surveys conducted in Brazil pointed to stable cocaine use over the 1997 - 2004 period.14 At the same time, there are reports of increasing activities of cocaine peddling gangs in the south-eastern states of the country and of the increasing exploitation of Brazil by international organized crime groups as a transit point for cocaine shipments from Colombia, Bolivia and Peru to Europe, often via Africa. This may have led to some increase of local cocaine consumption. ... 

The first scientific report of an orally transmitted outbreak of Chagas disease in Brazil was made in 1968 (Nery-Guimaraes et ah, 1968). This occurred in the district of Teutonia, municipality of Estrela (Rio Grande do Sul state) in the year 1965, between March 13 and March 22. Seventeen people from an Agricultural School (workers, students, and lecturers that usually had meals there) fell sick. The initial unconfirmed diagnosis was typhoid fever. Other possible diagnoses like infectious hepatitis, toxoplasmosis, infectious mononucleosis, and food poisoning were also discarded. The strain Rhizobium EQ1 was used. This strain was isolated from culture of the beans variety "Caupi" from an arid region of the northeast of Brazil. This strain was kept in agar-mannitol-yeast extract (YMA) for several months, and, after its characterization was cataloged, at the culture bank of the School of Chemistry from Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, under the code EQ1.

As metabolic balance techniques cannot separate the contribution of malabsorption from that of endogenous loss, collaborators at the Division of Nutrition, University of Sao Paolo Medical School at Rlbeirao Preto, Brazil and I undertook to assess Sn Zn interaction using the change-in-plasma-zinc approach. Healthy volunteers received 12.5 mg of zinc as 55 mg of zinc sulfate in 100 ml of CocaCola either alone (control) or with 25, 50 or 100 mg of tin as stannous chloride to constitute 2 1, 4 1 and 8 1 Sn/Fe ratios. We measured the change in plasma zinc concentration at hourly Intervals over a 4-h period. None of the treatments produced any significant decrement in the uptake of zinc in plasma (61) (Table V). Thus, unlike the dramatic effect of even lesser ratios of Fe/Zn (above), the plasma appearance of zinc was unaffected by soluble, inorganic, divalent tin ions.

The parents of Victor Nussenzweig (1928-) came to Sao Paulo, Brazil, from Poland in the 1920s as poor immigrants. Elis father started as a peddler carrying the merchandise on his shoulders and his mother was a housewife who kept a kosher kitchen and took care of the children s education. Victor and his two brothers went to public schools from kindergarten through graduate school. 

Victor entered medical school at the University of Sao Paulo (Sao Paulo, Brazil) in 1946 just after the end of the World War II. Like many of his friends, he was impressed with the important role of the Soviet Union in the defeat of Nazi Germany, and was attracted to socialist ideals and Marxist ideology. During the first three years of medical school he was deeply involved in student politics. His future wife, Ruth, was in the same class, and when the two started dating she convinced Victor that science was much more interesting than politics. Since then, their collaboration has been long lasting and fruitful in every sense of the word. 

This paper is the outgrowth of lectures the author gave at the Physics Institute and the Chemistry Institute of the University of Sao Paulo at Sao Carlos, Brazil, and at the VllPth Summer School on Electronic Structure of the Brazilian Physical Society [1]. The main text is a description of density-functional theory (DFT) at a level that should be accessible for students entering the field or researchers from other fields. A large number of footnotes provides additional comments and explanations, often at a slightly higher level than the main text. A reader not familiar with DFT is advised to skip most of the footnotes, but a reader familiar with it may find some of them useful.
