Standardization. Standardization in analytical chemistry, in which standards are used to relate the instrument signal to compound concentration, is the critical function for determining the relative concentrations of species In a wide variety of matrices. Environmental Standard Reference Materials (SRM s) have been developed for various polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH s). Information on SRM s can be obtained from the Office of Standard Reference Materials, National Bureau of Standards, Gaithersburg, MD 20899. Summarized in Table VII, these SRM s range from "pure compounds" in aqueous and organic solvents to "natural" matrices such as shale oil and urban and diesel particulate materials.

In addition, aqueous-phase data are available through the Radiation Chemistry Data Center of the Notre Dame Radiation Laboratory (http //www.rcdc.nd.edu/).

A special reference material, high-purity copper, RM 5, is also available from the Office of Standard Reference Materials. Similarly, the CG for many years has refrained from developing its own standards for many of its activities, and instead adopted hundreds of industrial standards. Italso transferred some of its offshore workplace inspection responsibilities to the MMS. A month before the Macondo accident in which eleven workers died, the recently retired chief of GG s Office of Standards Evaluation and Development stated that our efforts today are guided by 0MB, which directs agencies to use voluntary consensus standards in lieu of government-unique standards, except where inconsistent...

A significant portion of the project funding came from the Office of Standard Reference Data of the NBS (Dr. David R. Lide, Jr., Director). The NBS liaison to DIPPR was Dr. Howard J. White, Jr. DIPPR provided additional funding along with administrative and technical assistance. 

To ensure safe operating conditions and to maintain a record of inspections and maintenance work, the employer must establish a program of regular inspections of the power presses to include the date, serial number of the equipment, as well as the signature of the inspector. OSHA requires that all point-of-operation injuries be reported within 30 days to OSHA s Office of Standards and Development or the state agency administering an occupational safety and health program.
