Shift Patterns

Table 12 gives the estimated destinations for United States bituminous coal exports in 1976 and 1989. The volume of exports almost doubled during this period. About one-third of the bituminous coal exported from the United States in 1976 went to Europe, another third to Asia, and the remainder to North and South America. The pattern shifted to about 24% to North and South America, about 50% to Europe, 24% to Asia, and the balance to Africa ( ) ... 

The CVD reactions used to produce epitaxial silicon are described in Ch. 8. Originally, atmospheric-pressure CVD was used, but it is gradually being replaced by low-pressure CVD in spite of higher equipment cost and complexity. Low-pressure CVD appears to yield a better film with less autodoping and pattern shift.

In contrast, during the winter, the nonvolatile 5- and 6-ring PAHs BaP (Fig. 10.15b), benzo[6]fluoranthene, dibenzanthracene, benzo[g/t/]perylene, benzo[fc]fluoranthene, and indeno[o/]pyrene had 63-82% of their masses in the 0.05- to 0.5-/aiti range, primary emission mode I. However, as seen in Fig. 10.15c, the pattern shifts significantly to larger sizes for aerosols sampled in the summer. 

If compound 8 is irradiated (X > 300 nm) in the presence of diazoalkanes, the product pattern shifts dramatically for the diazoacetates and -malonates which have oxygen-containing substituents capable of coordination. At temperatures of about -40 to -20°C (tetrahydrofuran), photolysis predominantly yields mononuclear metallacycles 12 which are not yet accessible by any other means (135, 136). An X-ray diffraction study revealed the strict planarity of the cyclic system (136). The bidentate ligands that wind around the metal arise from metal-mediated carbonyla-tion of the respective carbenes (Scheme 6). 

Pattern shift is the phenomena that occurs when one attempts to grow an epi layer on such a nonuniform surface. The epi film has different growth rates on different crystal faces. For example, deposition is fastest on (112) and slowest on (111). Pattern shift is illustrated in Figure 22 for SiCI4 and Figure 23 for SiH2Cl2. Here we can clearly see that reduced pressure has minimized this problem in both cases. 

In simulating the cell cycle automaton response to 5-FU, we impose a circadian profile of the anticancer medication similar to that used in clinical oncology [30, 31] 5-FU is delivered in a semi-sinusoidal manner from 10p.m. to 10a.m., with a peak at 4 a.m. (Fig. 10.3b). During the remaining hours of the day and night, the drug concentration is set to zero. For comparison, we consider similar drug delivery patterns shifted in time, with peak delivery either at 10 a.m., 4 p.m., or 10 p.m. 

Sample height. The sample should be at the same level as the top of the holder. If the sample height is too low, the pattern shifts down the 26 scale, and if it is too high, it moves up the 26 scale. 

An experiment in progress in my laboratory has yielded results that indicate that prepubertal female mice prefer the odor of grouped females relative to other mouse odors the pattern shifts to avoidance of the odor from grouped females when the test subjects are 40-55 days of age, at and just after puberty. As adults, these mice do not exhibit a preference for, or avoidance of, the odor of grouped females.
