In aquatic systems dissolved aluminum species are toxic to fish. There exists a vast number of aluminum species, ranging from inorganic monomeric to complex colloidal. polymeric and organic complexes. A major problem, when studying aluminum species in water is that the species quickly convert one into the other (Fairman and Sanz-Medel 1995).

The most widespread biological application of three-phase fluidization at a commercial scale is in wastewater treatment. Several large scale applications exist for fermentation processes, as well, and, recently, applications in cell culture have been developed. Each of these areas have particular features that make three-phase fluidization particularly well-suited for them Wastewater Treatment. As can be seen in Tables 14a to 14d, numerous examples of the application of three-phase fluidization to waste-water treatment exist. Laboratory studies in the 1970 s were followed by large scale commercial units in the early 1980 s, with aerobic applications preceding anaerobic systems (Heijnen et al., 1989). The technique is well accepted as a viable tool for wastewater treatment for municipal sewage, food process waste streams, and other industrial effluents. Though pure cultures known to degrade a particular waste component are occasionally used (Sreekrishnan et al., 1991 Austermann-Haun et al., 1994 Lazarova et al., 1994), most applications use a mixed culture enriched from a similar waste stream or treatment facility or no inoculation at all (Sanz and Fdez-Polanco, 1990).

An accurate determination of copper and zinc traces in human serum samples from the International Measurement Evaluation Programme-17 launched by IRMM (Geel) has been made by isotope dilution TIMS.38 An analytical method for the multi-element determination of metals (Ti, V, Cr, Co, Ni and Mo) potentially released from dental implants and prostheses into human body fluids (in blood and urine) by ICP-MS (double-focusing sector field instrument and quadrupole instrument with octopole collision cell) for medical studies was developed in Sanz-Medel s group.39 The Cr and Co concentrations found in blood samples of patients with chromium-cobalt based alloy varied in the sub-p,gl 1 range and were not significantly higher than the basal levels found by other authors.40...

Sanz et al (485), who used H NMR at low magnetic fields to study the localization of vacancies in the octahedral sheets of aluminous biotites, were able to establish unambiguously that the vacancies are located in the pseudo-symmetric Ml sites. They also determined the orientation of the O—H and Fe—H bonds in these materials.

The distribution of essential and potentially toxic elements in different gross fractions is the preliminary step to study the particular chemical forms in which they are present in milk [105]. Multielemental distribution patterns in human, cow, and formula milks have been reported by the Sanz-Medel group [106]. Total elemental distributions in skimmed milk and/or milk whey samples were obtained after removing fat and/or caseins by ultracentrifugation. Then, in order to destroy the organic matter, each fraction (whole milk, skimmed milk, and milk whey) was digested by MW-assisted digestion for their minor and major elemental analysis.
