Sander dust

Wood-fired power boilers are generally found at the mills where wood products are manufactured. They are fired with waste materials from the process, such as "hogged wood," sander dust, sawdust, bark, or process trim. Little information is available on gaseous emissions from wood-fired boilers, but extensive tests of particulate matter emissions are reported (19). These emissions range from 0.057 to 1.626 gm per dry standard cubic meter, with an average of 0.343 reported for 135 tests. When they had the home renovated, surfaces were restored by removing the paint down to the bare surface on floors and woodwork and recoating with new varnish. Sanding is the greatest source of lead dust. Electric sanders, grinders, or planes are sometimes used after scraping to remove any paint that scraping did not get off. Although this method is simple and inexpensive, it is not recommended because it creates large amounts of toxic lead dust, unless a vacuum attachment connected to a HEPA-vac is used with the Sander. [Pg.121]

Even when sanding is done WITH the recommended attachment, lead dust can escape if the Sander is not kept perfectly flush with the surface at all times. Sanding should only be done on totally flat surfaces. [Pg.121]

There are several different renovation methods that should be incorporated into the project to limit the amount of dust created. Power tools, such as sanders, grinders, or needle guns, should be equipped with high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) attachments to capture any dust from these operations. Do not use a belt-sander, propane torch, heat gun, dry scraper, or dry sandpaper to remove lead-based paint. These actions create large amounts of lead dust and fumes. Lead dust can remain in your home long after the work is done. [Pg.11]

REMOVE THE OLD FINISH. Wipe down the piece with a damp rag to remove any accumulated dust and dirt. Follow the instructions in How to Strip Paint on page 240, and opt for a gel and not a liquid stripper (it is prone to drain off furniture before it can work properly). Use a putty knife and steel wool to remove as much paint or varnish as possible. If you don t want to use a chemical stripper, reach for the random orbital sander (or spend hours building muscle and character sanding by hand). [Pg.243]

Orbital sander. The genius of a random orbital sander is a sanding belt that moves so that any single grain on the belt never travels the same path twice. The result is a much smoother finish than a belt or disc sander, but it also means you can t remove as much material as quickly. A palm sander will handle most basic needs, and whatever model you choose, make sure it has dust control—either self-contained or with a hose connection to your wet/dry vac. [Pg.277]

A vacuum applied to such power tools as needle guns (Kurt, 1991) and others (Bloemke, 1991) eliminates most of the dust from the working environment when cleaning steel sfructures however, power tools (needle guns, brushes, sanders, and others) have difficulty with nonplanar surfaces, sueh as comers and edges, and wood is particularly vulnerable to harsh meehanieal treatment, so careful consideration should be given before using power tools. [Pg.207]
