Wood shavings

Lumber and wood products Sawmills, millwork plants, wooden containers, miscellaneous wood products, manufacturing Scrap wood, shavings, sawdust in some instances, metals, plastics, fibers, glues, sealers, paints, solvents... [Pg.2233]

Common materials—such as textiles in the form of fibers or fabrics, foamed rubber, foamed plastics, thin sheets of plastic, paper, corrugated cardboard, combustible dusts, dry grass and twigs, and wood shavings—are all examples of materials with large sutface areas in relation to their volumes. In a well-estabhshed fire, materials with relatively small surface areas, such as chunks of coal or logs, burn readily. [Pg.2314]

Oil spillages onto warm, absorbent materials, such as insulation, also have a limited life (see Sections 7.3.2 and 12.4.4). The oil soon decomposes to materials with a low auto-ignition temperature and self-ignites. As many insulation fires have started in this way, oil-soaked insulation should be removed without delay. Linseed oil ignites particularly easily. This has been known since at least 1925 nevertheless, in 1965 some cloths used to apply linseed oil to laboratory benches were not burned as directed but dropped into a waste bin. A fire started after a few hours and destroyed the laboratory [17J. Reference 18 lists substances that are liable to self-heat, and Reference 19 includes references to a number of incidents that have occuiTed involving substances as diverse as wood shavings, tobacco, milk powder, and soap powder. [Pg.389]

The essential part of the insulation system is the vapour barrier, which must be complete and continuous over the outer (warm) surface. Even materials such as coconut fibre, rice husks, sawdust and wood shavings are successfully used as insulants if the vapour barrier is good. [Pg.140]

Even with these problems, attempts have been made to demonstrate that mulches suppress weeds allelopathically. Putnam and DeFrank (12) and Barnes and Putnam (39) used Populus wood shavings to separate chemical and physical effects of mulches. Their work indicated that certain mulches do possess allelopathic potential. Liebl and Worsham (9) and Shilling and Worsham (14) placed mulch on tilled soil, after tilling, in an attempt to provide the weeds with an exposure to light. Their work also indicated that at least part of the suppression of weeds by wheat and rye mulch is allelopathic. Thus, research to date indicates that both mulch and the lack of soil tillage contributes to the suppression of weeds in no-till cropping systems. [Pg.245]

State of subdivision. The smaller the pieces of a solid reactant—the smaller the state of subdivision—the faster the reaction. Wood shavings burn faster than solid wood, for example, because they have more surface area in contact with the oxygen with which they are combining (for a given mass of wood). In a sense, this is also a corollary of factor 4. [Pg.283]

Adult females and weaned juveniles of both sexes held in outdoor flight enclosures roost boxes treated with 69,300 mg PCP/kg and wood shavings contained 65,000 mg/kg FW All dead within 24 h (90% survival in controls after 32 days). Carcasses of dead bats had 13.1 mg PCP/kg FW. Total PCP burden, in pg, ranged from 17-152 in whole body and 29-181 in fur. Maximum tissue concentrations, in pg/kg FW, were 99 in fat, 65 in liver, 25 in kidney, and 30 in remainder (Shore et al. 1991)... [Pg.1219]

Bark chips and shredded prunings Low fertility. Best used as a mulch only, in the ornamental garden. If dug in, they can rob the soil of nitrogen as they decay. This also applies to horse manure with wood shavings. [Pg.35]

Leave for three months if from an organic source, otherwise six months to allow for any unwanted pollutants to break down. If based on a bedding material of wood shavings rather than straw, at least a year will be needed, and even then the end product is best used only as a mulch. [Pg.52]

Fuel Oils Refined petroleum products having specific gravities in the range of 0.85 to 0.98 and flash point temperatures above 55 °C. This includes auto diesel, industrial heating fuels, various bunker fuels, furnace fuels. Refer to Chapter 4 for specific examples and discussion of properties. Fuel Value Refers to the amount of potential energy that can be released by a fuel during combustion. Expressed in units of BTUs per pond of fuel. Examples are asphalt (17,158 BTU/lb typical value), LPG (18,000 BTU/lb), wood shavings (8,250 BTU/lb). [Pg.237]
