Salicylic acid indications

This may be determined roughly by treating a small test portion with 3-4 ml. of hot water and acidifying with concentrated hydrochloric acid the absence of a precipitate in the warm solution indicates the essential completeness of the reaction. Salicylic acid is sparingly soluble and p-hydroxybenzoic acid is relatively soluble under these conditions. 

Rosolic acid, aurin, corallin, corallinphthalein, 4,4 -dihydroxy-fuchsone, 4,4 -dihydroxy-3-methyl-fuchsone (indicator) dissolve 0.5 g in 50 mL alcohol and dilute with water to 100 mL. Salicyl yellow (indicator) see alizarin yellow GG.

Given these findings, indications for salicylic acid peels include acne vulgaris (inflammatory and non-inflammatory lesions), acne rosacea, melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, freckles, lentigines, mild to moderate photodamage, and texturally rough skin. 

When treating acne vulgaris, topical and systemic therapies (if indicated) are initiated 2 to 4 weeks prior to peeling. Topical antibiotics and benzoyl peroxide based products can be used daily and discontinued 1 or 2 days prior to peeling. However, unless a deeper peel is desired, retinoids should be discontinued 7-10 days prior to salicylic acid peeling. Broad-spectrum sunscreens (UVA and UVB) should be worn daily (see Photo damage. Sunscreen section). 

Notice that neither the masses of the reactants nor the number of moles indicate directly which reactant is limiting. In this example, salicylic acid (C7 Hg O3) is the limiting reactant even though the mass of salicylic acid and the number of moles of salicylic acid are both larger than the corresponding amounts of acetic anhydride (C4 He O3). 

Staurosporine, a kinase inhibitor, also suppressed PAL transcription and enzymatic activation, which indicates that the phosphorylation of still unknown (transcription) factors happened in response to stimulation by pectic fragments. However, another staurosporine-insensitive but salicylic acid responding pathway led to the transcription of pathogenesis related (PR) genes [26]. 

Stuer et al. [46] evaluated the presence of the 25 most used pharmaceuticals in the primary health sector in Denmark (e.g., paracetamol, acetyl salicylic acid, diazepam, and ibuprofen). They compared PECs with experimental determinations and they conclude that measured concentrations were in general within a factor of 2-5 of PECs. Carballa et al. [45] also determined PECs for pharmaceuticals (17), musk fragrances (2) and hormones (2) in sewage sludge matrix. For that purpose they used three different approaches (1) extrapolation of the per capita use in Europe to the number of Spanish inhabitants for musk fragrances (2) annual prescription items multiplied by the average daily dose for pharmaceuticals and (3) excretion rates of different groups of population for hormones. They indicated that these PECs fitted with the measured values for half of them (carbamazepine, diazepam, ibuprofen, naproxen, diclofenac, sulfamethoxazole, roxithromycin, erythromycin, and 17a-ethiny I e strad iol).

Athlete s foot, tinea pedis, is a condition caused by a fungus. Management of athlete s foot lies with the use of antifungal preparations such as clotrimazole (an imidazole antifungal) and tolnaftate. Salicylic acid is a keratolytic agent indicated for use in treatment of corns, calluses and warts. 

Selenium sulphide, coal tar, ketoconazole and salicylic acid are agents that can be used in dandruff. Permethrin is an insecticide indicated in the eradication of head lice. Permethrin is available as alcoholic or aqueous lotions. 

In the absence of knowledge of the surface area of cement hydrates available for adsorption at the time of addition, it is difficult to estimate how many layers of water-reducing admixture molecules are adsorbed, but attempts have been made [40] indicating that over 100 layers may be formed with calcium lignosulfonate and salicylic acid at normal levels of addition. However, these calculations were based on specific surface areas of 0.3-1.0 m g-l, whereas other studies [27, 38, 39] have indicated... 

The British P 1993 [15] describes a procedure to determine benzoic acid in benzoic acid ointment that also contains salicylic acid. In this method, 2 g of the ointment is added to 150 mL water, and warmed until melted. The solution is titrated with 0.1 M NaOH, using phenolphthalein solution as the indicator. Salicylic acid is assayed by a spectrophotometric procedure, and its content subtracted from the total acid value to obtain the benzoic acid content.
