Staff management

Once management has made a commitment to the program and goals have been set, a program task force is established. The selection of a team leader will be dependent upon many factors including their ability to effec tively interface with both the assessment team and management staff. 

At the Winston Plant, changes in the plant management staff have resulted in a delay. The schedule at this plant will be delayed for two months through project completion. 

As discussed earlier in this chapter, the main requirements to ensure an appropriate safety culture are similar to those which are advocated in quality management systems. These include active participation by the workforce in error and safety management initiatives, a blame-free culture which fosters the free flow of information, and an explicit policy which ensures that safety considerations will always be primary. In addition both operations and management staff need feedback which indicates that participation in error reduction programs has a real impact on the way in which the plant is operated and systems are designed.

The Standards that are most relevant to laboratories have already been mentioned in Chapter 2. The management staff of a laboratory will look at all possibilities, decide on the Standard which best suits their organization and then design a quality management system to meet the chosen Standard s requirements. One has to remember that in terms of the management standard, quality means fitness for purpose. Senior staff in an organization will decide on the management standard that is most appropriate for their business.

Proper housekeeping does not just happen. It requires the leadership and wholehearted support of facility management, staff, and operating and maintenance supervision and the cooperation of all employees. 

Some companies choose to issue a follow-up report summarizing the status of action items related to incident investigations. It can be a useful tool for keeping the entire plant management staff up-to-date on what has been done and what is left to do to prevent recurrence. 

The management staff responsible for the area being audited ensures that actions are taken without undue delay to eliminate detected nonconformities and their causes. Follow-up activities include the verification of actions taken and the reporting of verification results (see 8.5.2).

The multidose formulation will be tested to determine its efficacy according to the Antimicrobial Effectiveness Test required by the USP.39 If the results support the USP requirements, international requirements must then be met. International markets require different preservatives, different concentrations, and different excipients of the formulation. In addition, the period required for the inhibition and/or killing of the challenge microorganisms may be different. International regulatory requirements for compliance should be well researched and understood by the scientific and the management staff. 

As the management staff would be supposedly aware of the environmental concerns and directly related to the welfare of the company, less effort would probably be required to motivate them for voluntary participation. However, it has to be confirmed that during the whole tenure of the program there is a high level of cooperation and support, even if such a program may cause short-term disruption to normal activities.
