Safety encouragement

Always clear up at the end of each session. This is an important aspect of safety, encouraging a responsible attitude towards laboratory work. [Pg.8]

Occupational Safety and Health Act. The Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA), as amended in 1990, encourages reduction of occupation safety and health ha2ards and promotes safe and healthful conditions. [Pg.371]

Developing and encouraging the use of undergraduate education curricula which will improve the safety knowledge and consciousness of engineers. [Pg.174]

Understanding and Encouraging Operational Discipline A workshop to enhance process safety, environmental responsibility, quality and profitability. AntiEntropics Inc., 1999. [Pg.212]

A general description of the three major classes of MDI s and brief descriptions of adhesive applications are shown in Table 1. More recently, MDl has become the isocyanate of choice in adhesives, partly because MDI has a lower vapor pressure than TDI does (see pp. 296-297 in [18]). Isocyanates have been shown to cause an allergic reaction in a small percentage of the population. This reaction can manifest itself in the form of an asthmatic condition [19]. Before starting work with isocyanates, researchers are encouraged to read about the proper precautions to take, in order to work safely with these materials. Researchers should also check with their local health and environmental safety representatives [20]. [Pg.767]

Process safety is fundamental to the basic practice of chemical engineering thus, the concepts of inherently safer processes should be instilled in chemical engineering students at an early stage. Practicing engineers should be encouraged to adopt the concepts. [Pg.5]

Much of this chemistry is still at an early stage of research, and there are few, if any, commercial applications. However, the potential environmental and safety benefits of these and other innovative chemical synthesis techniques will encourage further research and development. [Pg.39]

Research management has the responsibility to create a working environment that promotes, encourages, rewards, and facilitates the application of inherent safety in the development of process chemistries. [Pg.57]

Experience has shown that reactive chemistry hazards are sometimes undetected during bench scale and pilot plant development of new products and processes. Reactive chemistry hazards must be identified so they can be addressed in the inherent safety review process. Chemists should be encouraged and trained to explore reactive chemistry of "off-normal operations. Simple reactive chemicals screening tools, such as the interactions matrix described in Section 4.2, can be used by R D chemists. [Pg.125]

All contractors should interface with each other to encourage mutual understanding and coordinating their respective activities, as well as for reviewing and commenting on documents such as work plans or the safety plan. [Pg.31]

To make sure that all contractors and subcontractors maintain a minimum level of safety performance, the client, or general or main contractor, should establish standards for compliance. During the project planning stage, affected prime contractors should have an opportunity to provide input and resolve differences. Cross-cut committees are encouraged to allow prime contractors to standardize or normalize such essential elements as procedures, permit systems, and training. [Pg.31]

The hazardous waste standard requires employers to make certain that when showers are a necessary step in the decontamination process, their employees shower at the end of their work shift and when leaving the hazardous waste site. Sanitation-related showers (unlike decontamination showers) are understood to be voluntary. Decontamination and emergency showers should be located close to the worksite. Sanitary showers may be located at some distance from the worksite. A statement in the safety plan encouraging good personal hygiene and daily showers is a good idea. In addition, workers should be encouraged to shower daily even if no shower is available at the worksite. [Pg.162]

Process technology information will be a part of the process safety information package and should include employer-established criteria for maximum inventory levels for process chemicals limits beyond which would be considered upset conditions and a qualitative estimate of the consequences or results of deviation that could occur if operating beyond the established process limits. Employers are encouraged to use diagrams that will help users understand the process. [Pg.229]

Make sure your company s short-term objectives (e.g., updating aii P IDs) are consistent with broader PSM goais (e.g., accurate process safety information), sind communicate them in ways that clearly encourage work habits and procedures that support PSM performance. For exampie, your employees need to understand that the company will achieve its goal of reducing reportable incidents by changing its PSM procedures, not its reporting processes. [Pg.24]

An important part of (name s) mandate from the Committee is to assure that our plan for managing process safety reflects our businesses diverse needs and takes full advantage of our resident experience and specialized expertise. To do this, (name) needs your help effective implementation of PSM can only be achieved as a team effort. For this reason, we have encouraged him to identify and call on experts throughout Company X to work with him. [Pg.27]

As with previous, similar exercises, encourage your team to be creative. Like any sound management system, your PSM system probably creates unexpected side benefits over and above those related spedfically to safety performance. For example, the pilot test may have demonstrated that a new system, once installed, enabled the facility to reduce unplanned downtime with better planning and use of preventive maintenance. Or perhaps the pilot test process itself may have helped improve relations between the facility and corporate staff. [Pg.163]

Remember that installing your PSM system will not happen overnight, and it probably won t happen perfectly. Try not to become impatient your hard work will pay off if you encourage feedback and recognize the need for continuous reinforcement—at all levels—of the importance of safety improvement. [Pg.173]
