The secondary reactions are series with respect to the chloromethane but parallel with respect to chlorine. A very large excess of methane (mole ratio of methane to chlorine on the order of 10 1) is used to suppress selectivity losses. The excess of methane has two effects. First, because it is only involved in the primary reaction, it encourages the primary reaction. Second, by diluting the product, chloromethane, it discourages the secondary reactions, which prefer a high concentration of chloromethane. [Pg.40]

In attached growth film) methods, as with aerobic digestion, the microorganisms can be encouraged to grow attached to a support medium such as plastic packing or sand. In anaerobic digestion, the bed is usually fluidized rather than a fixed-bed... [Pg.316]

We will recall briefly the different families of hydrocarbons without attempting to give a summary of a course in organic chemistry. The reader is particularly encouraged to refer to general reference works for information concerning the nomenclature and properties of these compounds (Lefebvre, 1978). [Pg.2]

When drilling through normally pressured formations, the mud weight in the well is controlled to maintain a pressure greater than the formation pressure to prevent the influx of formation fluid. Atypical overbalance would be in the order of 200 psi. A larger overbalance would encourage excessive loss of mud Into the formation, slow down... [Pg.59]

As the name implies the company basically rents the rig and crew on a per day basis. Usually the oil company also manages the drilling operation and has full control over the drilling process. This type of contract actually encourages the contractor to spend as much time as acceptable on location . With increased cost consciousness, day rate contracts have become less favoured by most oil companies. [Pg.62]

This situation has recently arisen in the UK where competition for gas sales has been encouraged. Gas producers can enter into direct agreements with consumers (ranging from power stations to domestic users), using the national distribution grid if necessary. The impact of this change on gas price has been significant a reduction of around 60% in the period of a year. [Pg.195]

Introduction and Commercial Application Section 8.0 considered the dynamic behaviour in the reservoir, away from the influence of the wells. However, when the fluid flow comes under the influence of the pressure drop near the wellbore, the displacement may be altered by the local pressure distribution, giving rise to coning or cusping. These effects may encourage the production of unwanted fluids (e.g. water or gas instead of oil), and must be understood so that their negative input can be minimised. [Pg.213]

If oil and water are mixed as an emulsion, dehydration becomes much more difficult. Emulsions can form as oil-in-water or water-in-oil if mixed production streams are subjected to severe turbulence, as might occur in front of perforations in the borehole. Emulsions can be encouraged to break (or destabilise) using chemicals, heat or just gentle agitation. Chemical destabilisation is the most common method and laboratory tests would normally be conducted to determine the most suitable combination of chemicals. [Pg.248]

Another type of gravity separator used for small amounts of oily water, the oil interceptor, is widely used both offshore and onshore. These devices work by encouraging oil particles to coalesce on the surface of plates. Once bigger oil droplets are formed they tend to float to the surface of the water faster and can be skimmed off. A corrugated plate interceptor (CPI) is shown below and demonstrates the principle involved. However there are many varieties available. Plate interceptors can typically reduce oil content to 50-150 ppm. [Pg.248]

Some discontinuities may be identified by a conventional two-dimensional ultrasonic technique, from which the well-known C-scan image is the most popular. The C-scan technique is relatively easy to implement and the results from several NDE studies have been very encouraging [1]. In the case of cylindrical specimens, a circular C-scan image is convenient to show discontinuity information. The circular C-scan image shows the peak amplitude of a back-scattered pulse received in the circular array. The axial scan direction is shown as a function of transducer position in the circular array. The circular C-scan image serves also as an initial step for choosing circular B-scan profiles. The latter provides a mapping between distance to the discontinuity and transducer position in the circular array. [Pg.201]

The authors are grateful to Dr. Placid Rodriguez, Director IGCAR for his keen encouragement and support. Authors are also thankful to S/Shri S.Saravanan, V.Manoharan, P.Balaraman and Shri P.Sukumar for all their help in experimental work. [Pg.446]

A prototype is currently under evaluation by our partners in the Raysquins project and first results are very encouraging. [Pg.594]

In addition these directives had to be decided unanimously by the European Council which made their adoption cumbersome and slow. These directives are now referred to as old approach directives. A radical change was needed so that the Community legislation could respond to the needs of both, the completion of the internal market for the products concerned, and the need to offer to industry a flexible legislative environment which would encourage technical progress. [Pg.937]

Since both sides of Eq. X-39 can be determined experimentally, from heat of immersion measurements on the one hand and contact angle data, on the other hand, a test of the thermodynamic status of Young s equation is possible. A comparison of calorimetric data for n-alkanes [18] with contact angle data [95] is shown in Fig. X-11. The agreement is certainly encouraging. [Pg.369]

Thus, to encourage wetting, 7sl and 7lv should be made as small as possible. This is done in practice by adding a surfactant to the liquid phase. The surfactant adsorbs to both the liquid-solid and liquid-vapor interfaces, lowering those interfacial tensions. Nonvolatile surfactants do not affect 7sv appreciably (see, however. Section X-7). It might be thought that it would be sufficient merely to lower ytv and that a rather small variety of additives would suffice to meet all needs. Actually it is equally if not more important that the surfactant lower 7sL> and each solid will make its own demands. [Pg.466]

The existence of a characteristic isothenn for each adsorbate is encouraging... [Pg.633]

Near critical points, special care must be taken, because the inequality L will almost certainly not be satisfied also, cridcal slowing down will be observed. In these circumstances a quantitative investigation of finite size effects and correlation times, with some consideration of the appropriate scaling laws, must be undertaken. Examples of this will be seen later one of the most encouraging developments of recent years has been the establishment of reliable and systematic methods of studying critical phenomena by simulation. [Pg.2242]

At finite concentration, tire settling rate is influenced by hydrodynamic interactions between tire particles. For purely repulsive particle interactions, settling is hindered. Attractive interactions encourage particles to settle as a group, which increases tire settling rate. For hard spheres, tire first-order correction to tire Stokes settling rate is given by [33]... [Pg.2673]

In addition, we thank Dr. Gudrun Walter of Whey-VCH, for encouraging us to embark on this project and Dr. Romy Kirsten for the smooth collaboration in processing our manuscripts. [Pg.672]
