In the case of operations ranging between 760 and 10 3 torr, the two-stage rotary pump is adequate. Ultimate vacuum, using the diffusion pump installation, is better than 10-6 torr. [Pg.106]

The exhaust from a rotary pump, especially if it is being run in the ballast mode, i.e. pumping a fair quantity of air or other gas, is an aerosol of oil in the gases from the line. A variety of filters is now available commercially for cleaning exhaust gas, but a good additional safety precaution is a wide tube fitted to the outlet so that the gas stream can be vented to the nearest fume-cupboard or window. The pumping efficiency of a rotary pump drops off rapidly below ca. 10 Torr even under optimum conditions, and such pumps are therefore usually installed as a back-up to a more efficient high vacuum pump, such as a diffusion or a turbomolecular pump. [Pg.32]

The main analytical instrumentation in the vehicle is a benchtop GC/MS by Hewlett Packard, HP 5890 GC/5970 MSB (mass selective detector). A basic configuration for analyzing liquid samples includes a heated injection port and a capillary fused-silica column interfaced directly to the MS via a heated transfer line. The MS is a quadrupole design operated under vacuum provided by a diffusion pump and backed by a mechanical rotary pump. This type of seal has the rotary component and face mounted outside the seal chamber. The springs and drive elements are outside the pumped liquid. Drilling. Common drill rigs available for monitor-well installation include cable tool, air rotary, mud rotary, reverse rotary, and hollow-stem auger. The cable tool rig repeatedly lifts and drops a drill bit, drill stem, drilling jars, and rope socket. The drill bit crushes hard rock or loosens unconsolidated material and mixes the loosened particles with water to form a slurry or sludge. Higher pressures are required for pressure-assisted separations in packed columns used for capillary electrochromatography [235,376,464-466]. These columns require a high-pressure pump to provide the supplementary mobile phase flow. Conventional rotary injection valves and autosamplers can be used for sample introduction with this arrangement if a special inlet tee housing the electrode and split line with a restrictor is installed [422]. Vacuum systems with rotary vane vacuum pumps may be used where the process requires vacuums < 50 mbar or if liquid ring vacuum pumps cannot be used in the installation. These vacuum systems are designed to separate out as much of the process vapours and particles as possible on the intake side or to condense the process vapours into the atmosphere as moist air. Rotary vane vacuum pumps may be operated as recirculahng lubrication or blow-by vacuum pumps. The vacuum pump is built with a rotor turning eccentrically in a cylinder. The rotor has axial slots and rotating vanes are pressed against the cylinder by centrifugal force in these slots (Fig. 3). [Pg.312]

Vacuum systems with rotary vane vacuum pumps have the advantage that vacuums of < 1 mbar are theoretically possible, regardless of the ambient and water temperatures in the installation. The effect of the process on the possible operating pressure should be checked. [Pg.314]
