Rolling oil emulsions

The lubricating emulsion passes through a cycle. Fresh rolling oil emulsion is applied at the stand. Some of the water evaporates in the roll gap and the emulsion and the oil form a lubricating film on the siuface of the steel. The residual emulsion is run off. The run-off emulsion, whose composition now differs from that of the [Pg.407]

Mixtures of alkyl ethoxylates are frequently employed for emulsifying purposes, and in some cases protective colloids are also added to provide electro-steric stabilization. It is of crucial importance for the rolling result that the emulsifier has an optimal eomposition. Not only the surface quality of the sheet steel but also the rolling speed are decisively influenced by the size distribution of the oil droplets. A narrow spread of droplet sizes of about 2-4 pm has been found to be optimal, and even remains stable after being fed back into the emulsion cycle. [Pg.408]

Water-in-oil emulsions are used as fire-resistant hydrauhc fluids to replace petroleum hydrauhc fluids in general industry, coal mines, and rolling mills where a fire ha2ard exists (1). [Pg.271]

Rolling oil tanks were corroded on surfaces contacting the emulsion. Small pitlike depressions were present beneath aluminum soap deposits. Each pit was surrounded by a lightly etched region exactly mirroring deposit patterns (Fig. 6.26). [Pg.156]

Water-in-oil emulsion hydraulic fluids are used not only in applications such as those described above, but also where leaking hydraulic fluid could contact an ignition source such as in mines, general industry, and rolling mills (Wills 1980). They are temperature sensitive and do not withstand freezing temperatures their applications, therefore, are limited to environments where freezing temperatures do not exist. [Pg.288]

Rolling operations that use oil-in-water emulsions as coolants and lubricants are found in 27 plants of the aluminum forming industry. Table 5.5 summarizes the classical and toxic pollutant data for the rolling with emulsions subcategory. [Pg.205]

Lubrication can be used for ferrous alloys (graphite) and non-ferrous alloys (oil emulsion) to minimize friction during rolling. [Pg.96]

Cold rolling can be performed with low viscosity lubricants such as paraffin or oil emulsion. [Pg.96]
