Rolling oil

Deposits contained organic acids formed by oxidation of rolling oils. Up to 40% by weight of the lumps shown in Fig. 4.27A and B was iron oxides, hydroxides, and organic-acid iron salts. Acidic species concentrated in the deposits. [Pg.91]

Specimen Location Rolling oil coolant tanks, cold mill... [Pg.156]

Rolling oil tanks were corroded on surfaces contacting the emulsion. Small pitlike depressions were present beneath aluminum soap deposits. Each pit was surrounded by a lightly etched region exactly mirroring deposit patterns (Fig. 6.26). [Pg.156]

This case history illustrates the paradox so often encountered in microbiologically influenced corrosion. Clearly, two corrosion mechanisms were operating in the system, namely, acid attack and microbiologically influenced corrosion. To what degree each mechanism contributed to wastage is difficult to quantify after the fact. This was especially the case here, since other areas of the rolling oil system were attacked by a predominantly acidic form of corrosion. [Pg.156]

Severe corrosion by turbulent mill coolant was found generally throughout a rolling-oil system. Hose couplings were severely wasted in as little as 8 weeks (Fig. 7.23A and B). Turbulence caused by high-velocity flow through nozzles accelerated attack. Attack at bends, elbows, intrusive welds, and discharge areas was also severe. [Pg.180]

Wastage was caused by exposure to oleic acid and short-chain organic acids in the rolling oil. Fatty acids break down to form shorter-chain acids in service. However, oleic acid, of and by itself, is fairly corrosive. Attack due to oleic acid can be reduced substantially using appropriate chemical inhibition. [Pg.180]

Tin Free Steel—Can-Maker s Quality. CMQ (can-maker s quality) steel is the basic tin mill product. CMQ can be either single or double reduced steel. Rolling oils are removed, and the surface may or may not be passivated. A schematic cross section of passivated CMQ is shown in Figure 3. QAR (quality as rolled) 2CR plate is the basic 2CR tin mill product with the rolling oils on the surface. No further treatment is given. Figure 4 is a schematic cross section of QAR plate. [Pg.12]

The importance of the chemical etch on the aluminum cannot be over-emphasized. Surface layers from rolling oils or weak oxides may obviate any desired effects. [Pg.157]
