Resistive Ink

If part of a decoration falls within a heat sealing zone, special heat-resistant inks/over-lacquers may be necessary. Alternatively, heat seal areas can be kept free from print. 

The tremendous growth of the electronics and computer industry has also given a boost to phenolic resin sales. Printed circuits are manufactured by bonding copper foil to a laminated phenolic base, printing the area representing the circuit with acid-resisting ink, and then etching away the remainder of the foil. The dimensional stability, acid resistance, and excellent electricals make phenolics a necessity in the application.

Inks and Resists, inks and resists comprise a relatively small but high value and growing market for epoxies and epoxy derivatives. In 2001, there were an estimated of 6800 MT of epoxies and epoxy derivatives used in this market to produce ink and resist formulations worth almost 400 million in the U.S. market. Epoxies are often used with other resins such as polyester acrylates and urethane acrylates in these formulations. The largest applications are lithographic and flexographic inks followed by electronic inks and resists.

In the pattern-plating method, after the copper reduction process, plating resist layers of the reverse conductor image are formed on both sides of the panel by screening resist inks. In most fineline boards, photosensitive dry film is used instead.There are some minor variations in the pattern-plating method (see Fig. 5.6) ... 

Alkali-soluble resist inks are generally preferred. Stripping in the case of thermal and UV-curable resists is accomplished in 2 percent sodium hydroxide or in proprietary solutions. The resist is loosened and rinsed off with a water spray. Adequate safety precautions must be taken, since caustics are harmful. 

Cermets. Resistor films of this type are usually either mixtures of precious metals (e.g., Ag or Au) and glass frit or mixtures of PdO and glass frit. Cermet resistive inks are made by mixing a cermet powder with an organic vehicle of suitable viscosity. This mixture can be screened onto a substrate and cured by firing. Resistor films are typically 0.25 to 2.0 mils thick, and usually they do not require an overglaze for protection. Cermet films are sufficiently hard and abrasion resistant to be used as slide resistors in potentiometers. Since thick cermet films are not very sensitive to substrate surface roughness, special surface preparation usually are not necessary.
