Laminates phenolic

There are now commercially available a large range of laminated plastics materials. Resins used include the phenolics, the aminoplastics, polyesters, epoxies, silicones and the furane resins, whilst reinforcements may be of paper, cotton fibre, other organic fibres, asbestos, carbon fibre or glass fibre. Of these the phenolics were the first to achieve commercial significance and they are still of considerable importance. [Pg.654]

For laminating, the ammonia-catalysed resins are usually dissolved in industrial methylated spirits (IMS) or, less commonly, isopropyl alcohol. Resins which have a high hydroxymethyl content (i.e. made by using a high ratio of [Pg.654]

In fires, melamine—phenolic laminates ignite slowly at high temperatures and bum slowly producing smoke that has about the same toxicity as wood smoke (17). [Pg.537]

The properties of a phenolic laminate will obviously depend on a great many factors. Of these the following are perhaps the most important ... [Pg.656]

Although phenolic resins are too dark for use in the surface layers of decorative laminates these resins are employed in impregnating the core paper. In the.se cases a melamine-formaldehyde resin is used for impregnating the top decorative layer. Phenolic laminates have also been used in aircraft construction and in chemical plant. [Pg.658]

Phenolic Resins. Phenolic resins [9003-354] (qv) are thermosets prepared by the reaction of phenol with formaldehyde, through either the base-catalyzed one-stage or the acid-catalyzed two-stage process. The liquid intermediate may be used as an adhesive and bonding resin for plywood, particle board, fiberboard, insulation, and cores for laminates. The physical properties for typical phenolic laminates made with wood are listed in Table 1. [Pg.328]

The degree of tensile strength improvement is often in the 50 to 100 percent range. The effect of various fillers and loading ratios on the strength properties of epoxy adhesive formulation is indicated in Fig. 9.9. The effect of different fillers loaded at a constant 100 pph is indicated in Table 9.12 for shear strength on phenolic laminate and aluminum substrates. [Pg.178]

Phenolic RPs is used. In the cargo hold of the Jetstream 41, the lining material is a self-extinguishing glass fiber/phenolic laminate, giving also durability and lightweight with low smoke and toxic emissions. Fiber RPs is used for the interior surfaces of the 4.8 size (170 ft ) baggage... [Pg.581]

Phenolic laminates are also used in rocketry and space travel applications as heat shields during exit and re-entry into the earth s atmosphere. At very high temperatures, the surface burns away to leave a carbonaceous layer that glows and which is gradually sacrificed by ablation, protecting and insulating the under-surface for a considerable period. [Pg.210]

For more corrosive environments, epoxy vinyl esters and phenolic laminating resins [10] are used quite successfully as well, particularly where fire retardancy is an issue, such as in the oil industry. The glass is normally E-glass roving, but some mats are used for more complicated shapes and an external surface veil is incorporated to produce an acceptable degree of outer smoothness. [Pg.317]
