Tribromoneopentyl-alcohol (TBNPA) is an organic hahde used by the bromine industry as a reactive intermediate for high-molecular-weight flame retardants. This potential contaminant decomposes in an aqueous solution under basic conditions (pH from 7.0 to 9.5), by a sequence of reactions that release one bromide ion... [Pg.319]

Rigid and flexible polyurethane foams often utilize fire-retardant chemicals. For flexible foams, pentabromodiphenyl ether (now banned in Europe) is used, particularly to avoid the problem of scorch (yellowing of the inside of the block foam), which is most prevalent in hot, humid conditions. Tribromoneopentyl alcohol, which reacts into the urethane polymer, is also used. Brominated... [Pg.90]

SAFETY PROFILE Moderately toxic by ingestion. A skin and eye irritant. Combustible liquid when exposed to heat or flame can react with oxidizing materials. Explosive reaction when heated with Zn + tribromoneopentyl alcohol or 2,2,2-tris(bromomethyl) ethanol. To fight fire, use alcohol foam, CO2, dry chemical. When heated to decomposition it emits acrid smoke and irritating fumes. See also ESTERS. [Pg.605]

Tribromoneopentyl alcohol (FR-513) is a reactive FR for applications in poljmrethane foam materials and is recommended for non-leaching flexible foam applications such as combustion modified heat resistance (CMHR) products. It is also one of the preferred FRs for CFC-free rigid PU foam. Both in flexible and in rigid foams, systems based on FR-513 fulfil the highest fire safety requirements in Europe. [Pg.28]
