Polachrome films are used in standard 35-mm cameras, and the sHdes are mounted in standard size 5x5 cm (2x2 in.) mounts for projection in conventional 35-mm equipment. Dye Intermedia.tes, Dye intermediates are defined as those precursors to colorants that are manufactured within the dyes industry, and they are neady always colodess. Colored precursors are conveniendy termed color bases. As distinct from primaries they are only rarely manufactured in single-product units because of the comparatively low tonnages requited. Fluorescent brightening agents (FBAs) are neither intermediates nor tme colorants. Basic manufacturing processes for FBAs are described in Reference 18 (see Fluorescent whitening agents). [Pg.286]

Azoic Dyes. These are used to produce cost-effective heavy yellow, orange, red, maroon, navy blue, brown, and black shades and are ptinted alongside other dye classes to extend the coloristic possibiUties for the designer. Two approaches are adopted. The common method ia the United States is to use both a naphthol derivative and a stabilized color base, usually in the form of a diazo imino compound in the same print paste. This mixture is soluble in dilute caustic soda and no coupling takes place at this stage. The dried prints are passed through steam at 100—105°C that contains acetic and/or formic acid vapor. As neutralization takes place on the print, the coupling occurs rapidly and the insoluble azoic dye is formed. [Pg.372]

When the highest resistance to corrosion and solvent fumes is needed, catalyzed paints are the answer. These come in two parts a clear or colored base finish and a catalyst. Since their pot life is limited (typically eight hours), they must be mixed just prior to use. Brochures with information on their chemical resistance can be obtained from companies that sell industrial finishes. Since the resistance to different chemicals varies from brand to brand, a planner should study several types to find one that will best suit the particular application. These finishes are of the high gloss type. For highest chemical resistance to fumes, a coat of clear finish should be applied on top of the colored one. While the vehicle in the finish is very resistant, the pigments may not be and therefore could discolor. [Pg.68]
