The still open question, Information or metabolism first has again been discussed by Robert Shapiro. In an article with the title Did This Molecule Start Life A Simple Origin for Life , he again stresses that it is improbable that life could have begun in an RNA world (referred to here as RNA-first ). Shapiro offers his own suggestion in the metabolism debate he assumes that cyclical processes, occurring in small compartments, lead from small molecules to systems of higher complexity. The Shapiro model takes into account aspects of the approaches and hypotheses proposed by Wachtershauser (see Sect. 7.3), de Duve (see Sect. 7.4) and Kauffmann (see Sect. 9.3). In order to avoid one-sidedness, Shapiro s article is accompanied by a short reply An RNA-First Researcher Replies . The rules for writing a research proposal title are similar to those for the journal article and poster. Like journal article titles (see table 7.1), a proposal title should include keywords that will help the program officer decide where to send your proposal for review. The title should also include keywords that capture the need(s) targeted by the granting institution. Abbreviations and acronyms should be avoided. This information asymmetry poses a powerful challenge to sponsors. The problem is particularly severe for end-to-end proposals, which, as previously noted, are automatically limited to pull incentives like prizes or Advanced Purchase Commitments. These incentives share the generic weakness that sponsors must decide how large a reward to offer. If sponsors offer a reward that is lower than expected costs, no R D occurs. But if sponsors offer a reward that is higher than expected costs, they will pay too much for any desired level of R D. Sponsors could avoid both dangers if end-to-end systems were compatible with contract R D, which lets sponsors set rewards based on sealed bids and other forms of competition that encourage researchers to reveal their true costs. We have demonstrated our arguments on the basis of the Ambio (1982) war scenario, using much simplified rainout, aerosol physics and radiative equilibrium models.
