Hydrogen cyanide (HCN) is a colorless, highly poisonous gas or liquid (below 26.7 °C) having an odor of bitter almonds (Hartung 1994 Pesce 1994). It is a weak acid. Exposures may occur in industrial situations as well as from cigarette smoke and combustion products and from naturally occurring cyanide compounds in foods. There is a potential for exposure when any acid is mixed with a cyanide salt. Intravenously administered sodium nitroprusside (Na2[Fe(CN)5N0]-2H20) has been used clinically to lower blood pressure (Schulz et al. 1982). Measurements showed that the amount of soot produced by the flame was affected by the mixing process between the air jet vortices, the fuel jets, and naturally entrained external air. PIV and smoke flow visualization showed that the air vortices induced strong external air entrainment into the main jet flow very close to the exit plane when the phase angle between the fuel jets and air jet were at the value for minimized soot production. When the wrong phase angle was used, i.e., that which leads to soot formation, the air vorticity coherence was reduced, the vortices appeared to develop further downstream, and the air entrainment at the flame base was significantly reduced. [Pg.97]

When a fuel-rich pyrolant burns in the atmosphere, oxygen molecules from the atmosphere diffuse into the initial combustion products of the pyrolant. The combustion products burn further and generate heat, light, and/or smoke in the atmosphere. A typical example is the combustion process in ducted rockets fuel-rich products generated in a gas generator are burnt completely in a combustion chamber after mixing with air pressurized by a shock wave that is taken in from the atmosphere. [Pg.285]
