Research on design

Provides abstracts of worldwide research on design and performance of mechanical draft and natural draft wet, dry, and dry-wet combination cooling towers. Abstracts cover studies on size reduction, corrosion protection, and economic optimization of cooling towers primarily used with nuclear power plants and fossil fuel power plants. Also covered are abstracts which pertain to cooling towers used in waste-water treatment. It contains 305 abstracts, 65 of which are new entries to the previous edition. [Pg.264]

Since 1983, Federal law has stimulated the development of orphan products through a series of incentives and subsidies, including the tax credit for clinical research on designated orphans drugs. (See chapters 8 and 9 for more detail.) These products may have a very different cost... [Pg.71]

In an attempt to create biomimetic systems, there has been much research on designing dendritic molecules with porphyrins and similar molecules at their cores. Diederich etal. have synthesized dendrimers with iron and zinc-porphyrin cores in an effort to model heme and cytochrome c systems [46-49]. In these cases, the redox reactions occurring at the center of the molecule were found to be affected by the nature of the dendritic foliage. The porphyrin-centered (the Zn(II) is not electroactive) first oxidation in the zinczinc-tetraphenylporphyrin to 4-0.65 V for the largest zinc-porphyrin dendrimer (compare to the results of Kaifer [35] above). However, for the iron porphyrin dendrimers, the Fe(II/III) redox couple shifts from —0.23 V versus SCE for the smaller dendrimer to 4-0.19 V for the larger one [48]. In a different set of experiments, Diederich and coworkers demonstrated that increasing the amount... [Pg.5945]

In continuation of our research on design of novel catalysts for selective organic transformations, we have synthesized more flexible, expanded PNN-type pincer ruthenium complexes (18-20). However, only modest catalytic activity and selectivity was observed with these bridged-bipyridine-based PNN-Ru(II) complexes in amide hydrogenation (25-65% yields) and other reactions [70]. This is likely a result of cyclometalation of the active species 21 and 22, which is detrimental to the catalysis (Scheme 8 Fig. 10). The low stability of the expected dearomatized complex (20a) formed by deprotonation of 20 was also detrimental to catalysis. [Pg.31]

Eurther research on convective transport under low Reynolds number, quasicontinuum conditions is needed before the optimal design of such a micro heat exchanger is possible. The cooling heat exchanger is usually thermally linked to a relatively massive substrate. The effects of this linkage need to be explored and accurate methods of predicting the heat-transfer and pressure-drop performance need to be developed. [Pg.495]

The New Paraho Corporation has been conducting research on asphalt derived from shale ok, SOMAT, at its pkot plant (Rifle, Colorado) (54,55). It is the only active ok shale operation in the United States as of 1995. New Paraho is continuing its pkot operations whke designing a commercial fackity to produce SOMAT. The economics appear promising (56). [Pg.357]

Antimony tfioxide is currently designated as a possible human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (lARC) and ACGIH (31). However, a chronic inhalation study, conducted by the Antimony Oxide Industry Association (AOIA), found no evidence of carcinogenicity (31,32). [Pg.199]

Computer-aided process synthesis systems do not mean completely automated design systems (57). Process synthesis should be carried out by interactive systems, in which the engineer s role is to carry out synthesis and the machine s role is to analy2e the performance of synthesized systems. Computet apphcations in the future will probably deal with the knowledge-based system in appHed artificial intelligence. Consequendy, research on computer-aided process synthesis should be directed toward the realization of such systems with the collaboration of experienced process engineers. [Pg.82]

Research. Much of the research on commercial-size distiUation equipment is being done by Fractionation Research, Inc. (FRI), a nonprofit, industry-sponsored, research corporation. The industrial sponsors are fabricators, designers, and constmctors, or users of distiUation equipment. PubHcations include Hquid mixing on sieve plates (91), bubble cap plate efficiency (92), and sieve plate efficiency (93,94). A motion picture of downcomer performance is also avaUable (95). References 96 and 97 cover the Hterature from 1967 to 1990. [Pg.175]

It is impossible to specify a completely foolproof coupling, particularly by manufacturer and model number. Still, in the interest of reliability, the specification should cover the subject of couplings. This requires the use of plant feedback and a lot of research on the part of the specification writer to determine the latest developments in coupling design. Unfortunately, when a vendor furnishes a coupling, it often becomes just another outside purchased item that he may purchase with a minimum specification and strictly on low price. [Pg.451]

The last-mentioned property of a synthetic process, i.e. versatility, is frequently an important consideration in research on optimally effective therapeutic agents in which the synthesis of a large series of structural analogs from a single intermediate is desirable. This aspect of the problem-solving environment can play a decisive role in synthetic design. [Pg.76]

This principle is applied not only to the PVA-PVAc composites but to other polymer composites. The composite structure does not always need to be porous but may be powders and gels designed for the wettability by solvents and the extension of the surface area in soluble polymers. From this point-of-view, the present work sheds a new light on the research on composite materials related to graft polymers and copolymers. [Pg.176]

The time to assemble the implementation team would ideally be prior to researching and designing the implementation proposal. This is has two main advantages first, a proposal that comes from a group is often more believable and secondly, you can share the preparation work if you are working as a team rather than on your own. If the team was not formed prior to drafting the implementation proposal, this should be your first task after it has been passed. [Pg.215]
