It is impossible to specify a completely foolproof coupling, particularly by manufacturer and model number. Still, in the interest of reliability, the specification should cover the subject of couplings. This requires the use of plant feedback and a lot of research on the part of the specification writer to determine the latest developments in coupling design. Unfortunately, when a vendor furnishes a coupling, it often becomes just another outside purchased item that he may purchase with a minimum specification and strictly on low price. 

Even though you may not have designed or manufactured the purchased items, you have a responsibility to ensure that such items are fit for their purpose if you sell them on to your customer either directly or as part of another product, because you selected them. If your customer selected the products, they should be governed by the requirements on purchaser supplied product (see Part 2 Chapter 7). 

The vendor shall submit complete parts lists for all equipment and accessories supplied. The lists shall inelude manufaeturer s unique part numbers, materials of eonstrae-tion, and delivery times. Materials shall be identified as specified in 2.11.1.2. Eaeh part shall be eompletely identified and shown on eross-sectional or assembly-type drawings so that the purchaser may determine the interchangeability of these parts with other equipment. Parts that have been modified from standard dimensions and/or finish to satisfy specific performance requirements shall be imiquely identified by part munber for interchangeability and future duplication pmposes. Standard purchased items shall be identified by the original manufacturer s name and part number. 

Appropriate characterization has to be made of reference substances, reagents and other purchased items as well as of test samples, solutions and other preparations that are used for the laboratory activity. The supplies must meet specified requirements appropriate to their use.
