Cooling combination

Terephthahc acid (TA) or dimethyl terephthalate [120-61 -6] (DMT) reacts with ethyleae glycol (2G) to form bis(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate [959-26-2] (BHET) which is coadeasatioa polymerized to PET with the elimination of 2G. Moltea polymer is extmded through a die (spinneret) forming filaments that are solidified by air cooling. Combinations of stress, strain, and thermal treatments are appHed to the filaments to orient and crystallize the molecular chains. These steps develop the fiber properties required for specific uses. The two general physical forms of PET fibers are continuous filament and cut staple. [Pg.327]

Abstract The techniques of atom cooling combined with the atom interferometry make possible the realization of very sensitive and accurate inertial sensors like gyroscopes or accelerometers. Below earth-base developments, the use of these techniques in space, as proposed in the HYPER project (ass.stud), should provide extremely-high sensitivity for research in fundamental physics. [Pg.359]

While the shortcakes are cooling, combine all the strawberry ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Let stand for about 30 minutes, until the strawberry juices come out. (You may need to drain the mixture before placing it on the shortcakes.)... [Pg.181]

Fig. 4.10 Conductive cooling combined with mixing to cause the precipitation of amorphous silica in chimneys from two different fluids at Guaymas Basin (Peter and Scott 1988). As in Figure, quartz does not precipitate for kinetic reasons nor does amorphous silica by simple mixing of the vent fluid with ambient seawater (line A). Amorphous silica does precipitate as a consequence of conductive cooling and mixing. The relative amounts of mixing may be determined accurately from the intercepts of the fluid inclusion homogenization temperatures with the silica saturation curve (lines B-F) (Scott 1997)... If high wellhead pressures are available over long periods, cooling can be achieved by expanding gas through a valve, a process known as Joule Thomson (JT) throttling. The valve is normally used in combination with a liquid gas separator and a heat exchanger, and inhibition measures must be taken to avoid hydrate formation. The whole process is often termed low temperature separation (LTS). [Pg.251]

Therefore, tire dissipative force tenn cools tire collection of atoms as well as combining witli tire displacement tenn to confine tliem. The damping time constant z = is typically tens of microseconds. It is important to bear in... [Pg.2469]

Boron trioxide is not particularly soluble in water but it slowly dissolves to form both dioxo(HB02)(meta) and trioxo(H3B03) (ortho) boric acids. It is a dimorphous oxide and exists as either a glassy or a crystalline solid. Boron trioxide is an acidic oxide and combines with metal oxides and hydroxides to form borates, some of which have characteristic colours—a fact utilised in analysis as the "borax bead test , cf alumina p. 150. Boric acid. H3BO3. properly called trioxoboric acid, may be prepared by adding excess hydrochloric or sulphuric acid to a hot saturated solution of borax, sodium heptaoxotetraborate, Na2B407, when the only moderately soluble boric acid separates as white flaky crystals on cooling. Boric acid is a very weak monobasic acid it is, in fact, a Lewis acid since its acidity is due to an initial acceptance of a lone pair of electrons from water rather than direct proton donation as in the case of Lowry-Bronsted acids, i.e. [Pg.148]

The gases from the kiln contain about 9% sulphur dioxide. (The calcium oxide combines with the silica to form a silicate slag which, when cool, is crushed and mixed with some anhydrite to give cement, a valuable by-product.)... [Pg.297]

Collidine 2i5 d carboxylic acid. Boil a mixture of 5 g. of the ester (II) and 50 ml. of 15% ethanolic potash under reflux for 30 minutes. The dipotassium salt crystallises during the boiling and during the subsequent cooling. Filter off the potassium salt at the pump and wash it with a small quantity of ethanol. Dilute the filtrate with about an equal volume of ether to precipitate a further small crop of the salt. Yield of combined crops 4 5 g. from 5 g. of the estei (I). [Pg.297]

B) Methiodi s. Members of Classes (i), (ii) and (iv) combine wdth methyl iodide (some very vigorously) to form quaternary methiodides. It is best to add the amine to an excess of methyl iodide dissolved in about twice its volume of methanol, allow any spontaneous reaction to subside, and then boil under reflux for 30 minutes (extend to 1 hour for Class (iv) except pyridine and quinoline). The methiodide may crystallise when the reaction-mixture cools if not, evaporate the latter to small bulk or to dryness, and recrystallise, (M.ps., pp. 553-554 )... [Pg.378]

Cool the remainder of the filtrate and extract three times with ether, using 20 - 30 ml. for each extraction. Dry the combined ethereal extracts over powdered anhydrous sodium sulphate. Filter into a small flask and distil off the ether on a water-bath. Pour the residual oil into a small dish or beaker crystallisation takes place almost immediately. The salicyl alcohol so obtained is almost pure, but it may, if so desired, be recrystallised from a small quantity of benzene. It is a colourless crystalline solid, m.p. 86 , readily soluble in water it gives a violet coloration with ferric chloride. [Pg.517]

The vapour pressure of the bromine should be maintained at about half an atmosphere (vapour pressures at 35° and 40° are 324 and 392 mm. respectively). If the water bath becomes too warm, it should be cooled immediately with ice, as otherwise more bromine will va lourise than can combine with the hydrogen present. [Pg.181]
