Research narrative

Qualitative strategies which include ethnography, grounded theory, case studies, phenomenological research, narrative research. 

I ofTer my remarks, not as a carefully worked-out theoretical scheme, nor as a well-researched narrative, but rather as a patchwork of flioughts that occur to me as I look back and reflect. 

Data gathered in the lessons were used to produce case studies for each of the groups of students because such case studies yield rich descriptions of events that are presented in a chronological narrative that incorporates the researcher s observations. Due to the possible inclusion of such an interpretation of the data, case studies go beyond simple descriptions of the situation and support the analysis of the phenomenon being studied (Cohen, Manion, Morrison, 2000). In order to discuss the research questions, we browsed the original case studies to identify evidence of how the students dealt with the levels of representation. Whenever it is appropriate, such evidence is included in the later sections of this chapter. 

This narrative was first presented at Don Boyd s third annual Central Indiana Computational Chemistry Christmas Luncheon (CICCCL-3) on December 18,1997. Although it is specihc for Eli Lilly and Company, the progress and problems that transpired there were probably not too different from developments at other large, forward-looking, research-based pharmaceutical companies. 

Like everyone, the people profiled in this volume are evolving. The narratives reflect their thoughts and experiences at the time of the interviews. Since then many have changed course in response to new research or personal growth, due to deteriorating or improved health, or all of the above. The themes and coping strategies they discuss, however, are timeless.

The number of clinical communications published per year has increased to staggering proportions. Matthews (2006) noted that there are currently on the order of20,000 biomedical journals that publish on the order of two million articles a year. This makes it extremely difficult for a clinician who would like to research a particular topic to locate all of the relevant articles. Accordingly, two kinds of review papers can be very helpful. The first is narrative reviews. These collate, compare, discuss, and summarize the current state of knowledge (Matthews, 2006). Narrative reviews are descriptive in nature. The second kind of review incorporates meta-analysis. These reviews are quantitative in nature. 

Chapter 2 is the first chapter in which individual biographies of women chemists appear. We have endeavoured to place each biography in the most relevant narrative. In some cases, this is in the chapter of the institution from which the woman graduated in others, where she undertook research or became employed in others, in the context of her speciality or time frame. Where possible, we have cross-referenced the biographical accounts to linking locations in other chapters. 

A coordinated team of users, engineers, safety inspectors, and quality representatives will map the operations required to meet the business need that is, the scientific research and development operations, as well as the production process or the goods in process. The processes are often presented in flow-diagram form supported by descriptive narratives to expand process definition where required. Interaction between processes must be clearly defined. 

The overthrow of the phlogiston theory makes a good, teachable narrative. But beyond that, much of the research on eighteenth-century chemistry in this country...
