Historically the Shaker (Sh) K channel was the first K channel which was cloned and characterized [6-10]. Subsequently many more channel cDNAs and genes have been isolated and studied. Yet Sh channels remained in the forefront of channel research. The study of Sh channel mutants has provided the most thorough insight into structure-function relationships of K channels to date. I will first discuss in this chapter the primary sequences of voltage-gated channels. I will only use a few selected examples for discussion. As of this time, so many related K channel protein sequences have been published that it is not feasible to discuss all of them. Subsequently, I will describe in detail the present knowledge about functional K" " channel domains which are implicated in activation, inactivation and selectivity of the channel.

Over the last thirty years, many approaches for H2 production by whole-cell and cell-free systems have been explored, and a number of pilot-scale feasibility studies have been performed. No long-term research studies on the environmental fate of silver were identified. However, environmental monitoring being conducted in conjunction with remedial investigation/feasibility studies at NPL sites where silver has been found should add useful information regarding environmental concentrations, chemical species, fate, and transport of the compounds. 

The series Advances in Industrial Control aims to report and encourage technology transfer in control engineering. The rapid development of control technology has an impact on all areas of the control discipline. New theory, new controllers, actuators, sensors, new industrial processes, computer methods, new applications, new philosophies..., new challenges. Much of this development work resides in industrial reports, feasibility study papers and the reports of advanced collaborative projects. Remedial investigations and feasibility studies conducted at the 154 NPL sites known to be contaminated with barium will add to the available database on exposure levels in environmental media, exposure levels in humans, and exposure registries and will increase the current knowledge regarding the transport and transformation of barium in the environment. R d (big R and little d) is product or process research with development only to the level of feasibility studies. Characteristically this work leads to new business ventures. 

Hphis chapter presents results of a Chevron Research Company study sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to demonstrate the feasibility of converting whole shale oil to a synthetic crude resembling a typical petroleum distillate. The synthetic crude thus produced then can be processed, in conventional petroleum-refining facilities, to transportation fuels such as high-octane gasoline and diesel and jet fuels. The raw shale oil feed used in this study is a typical Colorado shale oil produced in a surface retort in the so-called indirectly heated mode. 

Chapter reason being the most complete and detailed feasibility study from the research project so far it could serve as an integrated example of practically all theoretical and practical points raised in earlier chapters this advantage was considered to be more important than the advantage mentioned above. 

Long-term research studies on the environmental fate of 1,1-dichloroethane have not been identified. The data generated as a result of the remedial investigation/feasibility studies of the 189 sites on the National Priority List (NPL) known to be contaminated with 1,1-dichloroethane should add to the current knowledge regarding the environmental transport and fate of the compound.
