Beings of reason

A prerequisite to a corrodable material being used is that it is known to have a useful and reasonably predictable life. Planned, or unplanned downtime costs money and the intervals between planned replacements must be of reasonable duration. In practice, the replacement interval is usually conservative at first and then as experience accumulates, the intervals between planned replacements will usually extend. The main reason for choosing a planned maintenance policy is that on a discounted cash flow (DCF) calculation over the life of the plant, the cost of regular replacements including maintenance labour and downtime is less than the extra initial capital cost of a more durable material. 

Reinforcement added in the form of a ring or saddle as part of area A4 shall be of reasonably constant width. A vent hole shall be provided in accordance with para. GR-3.4.9(g). 

Results from molecular mechanics can also be of reasonable accuracy, so long as the molecules addressed contain only functionality well represented in the force field training set. While extensive compilations of data are not available, Halgren has compared MM3 and MMI T 94 over a test set of 157 frequencies from organic molecules and found RMS errors of 57 and 60 cm", respectively. 

There are other mles-of-thumb based on economic experience, which the reader will recognize, such as the optimum reflux ratio in distillation and the optimum liquid to gas ratio in gas absorption. You may also specify recoveries of key conq)onents or their concentrations in an exit stream for separators. When we use any of these rules, the assim tion is that the calculated separator size will be of reasonable cost, approximating the optimum-size separator. Similarly, for chemical reactors we may specify conversion of a desirable con jound, its exit composition or an approach temperature difference. For chemical reactors, the approach temperature difference is the difference between the actual temperature and the chemical-equilibrium ten5)erature. Again, we assume that a reactor that approximates the optimum-size reactor will result when using this rule. 

Condenser coils should be of reasonably accurate helical form and made from thin-walled tubing of 6-8 mm diameter. Successive turns of the coil should be as close together as possible, without actually touching, so that the finished spiral will not be unnecessarily long. 

The role and status of a textbook. If a book is to be a useful guide to drug use it must offer clear conclusions and advice. If it is to be of reasonable size, alternative acceptable courses of action will often have to be omitted. What is recommended should be based on sormd evidence where this exists, and on an assessment of the opinions of the experienced where it does not. 

The anode and cathode should be stable in the electrolysis medium, allow the desired oxida-tion/reduction reactions at the highest possible rates with miiumal by-product formation, and be of reasonable cost. In actuality, the electrodes may corrode or undergo physical wear during reactor operation, which may limit their lifetime. Often, if an expensive electrode material is needed for a given reaction, it can be plated or physically coated on a less costly, inert, and electronically conducting substrate. Common anode and cathode materials are listed in Table 26.8. 

Tn the development of oxidative automotive emission control catalysts for use in the 1975 model year, certain requirements were recognized from the beginning. The catalyst had to be physically rugged and capable of withstanding both the mechanical and thermal abuse to which it would be subjected in an automobile driven by average drivers on real roads. The catalyst had to exhibit high levels of activity so that the catalytic units would be of reasonable size. The catalyst had to be stable for at least 50,000 miles and capable of withstanding chemical abuse from the exhausts of the various fuels to which it would be subjected.

In a more recent work (Caneba, 2007a), the FRRPP process was shown to be capable of producing dispersions of VDC copolymer radicals that we were able to maintain their activity prior to reaction with a new set of monomers to form block copolymers. Note that in Table 1.1.2, the LCST of VDC copolymers have been found to be of reasonable values.
