The whole problem is best dealt with by not making the waste in the first place, i.e., waste minimization. If waste can be minimized at the source, this brings the dual benefit of reducing waste treatment costs and reducing raw materials costs. [Pg.274]

Starch is a polysaccharide found in many plant species. Com and potatoes are two common sources of industrial starch. The composition of starch varies somewhat in terms of the amount of branching of the polymer chains (11). Its principal use as a flocculant is in the Bayer process for extracting aluminum from bauxite ore. The digestion of bauxite in sodium hydroxide solution produces a suspension of finely divided iron minerals and siUcates, called red mud, in a highly alkaline Hquor. Starch is used to settle the red mud so that relatively pure alumina can be produced from the clarified Hquor. It has been largely replaced by acryHc acid and acrylamide-based (11,12) polymers, although a number of plants stiH add some starch in addition to synthetic polymers to reduce the level of residual suspended soHds in the Hquor. Starch [9005-25-8] can be modified with various reagents to produce semisynthetic polymers. The principal one of these is cationic starch, which is used as a retention aid in paper production as a component of a dual system (13,14) or a microparticle system (15). [Pg.32]

Dual-Pressure Process. Dual-pressure processes have a medium pressure (ca 0.3—0.6 MPa) front end for ammonia oxidation and a high pressure (1.1—1.5 MPa) tail end for absorption. Some older plants still use atmospheric pressure for ammonia conversion. Compared to high monopressure plants, the lower oxidation pressure improves ammonia yield and catalyst performance. Platinum losses are significantiy lower and production mns are extended by a longer catalyst life. Reduced pressure also results in weaker nitric acid condensate from the cooler condenser, which helps to improve absorber performance. Due to the spHt in operating conditions, the dual-pressure process requires a specialized stainless steel NO compressor. [Pg.41]

In 1982 a study of the usefulness of DBBF in the production of a blood substitute was reported (99). A single modification achieved the dual goals of reduced oxygen affinity and restricted tetramer—dimer dissociation. This work was confirmed in 1987 (98). The product, called aa-hemoglobin, was formulated in Ringer s lactate. P q under physiologic conditions is 3.7 kPa (28.0 torr). Hill s parameter is 2.2, and the Bohr effect was reduced (100). Plasma retention was increased, and the product appeared to be less heterogeneous than some of the other derivatives under study. In equation 1, the Grignard reagent, C H MgBr, plays a dual role as reducing agent and the source of the arene compound (see Grignard reaction). The Cr(CO)g is recovered from an apparent phenyl chromium intermediate by the addition of water (19,20). These effects can be attributed mainly to the inductive nature of the chlorine atoms, which reduces the electron density at position 4 and increases polarization of the 3,4-double bond. The dual reactivity of the chloropteridines has been further confirmed by the preparation of new adducts and substitution products. The addition reaction competes successfully, in a preparative sense, with the substitution reaction, if the latter is slowed down by a low temperature and a non-polar solvent. Compounds (12) and (13) react with dry ammonia in benzene at 5 °C to yield the 3,4-adducts (IS), which were shown by IR spectroscopy to contain little or none of the corresponding substitution product. The adducts decompose slowly in air and almost instantaneously in water or ethanol to give the original chloropteridine and ammonia. Certain other amines behave similarly, forming adducts which can be stored for a few days at -20 °C. Treatment of (12) and (13) in acetone with hydrogen sulfide or toluene-a-thiol gives adducts of the same type. [Pg.267]

The second cutwater and volute channel create an additional obstruction to the flow through this pump, and for that reason it robs some energy from the fluid. This will reduce the efficiency to a small degree, but the operational range of these pumps is quite broad as you can see in the graph.
