Once a consumer has purchased a material made of a polymer, the likelihood of it being recycled is dramatically reduced. In the United States there are three resins that are commonly recycled polyethylene, polypropylene, and polyethylene terephthalate, SPI (The Society of the Plastics Industry) recycling codes, found on the bottom of food containers, provide the consumer with information as to the recyclability of the material. Table 17,1 lists these codes. [Pg.279]

In the industrial field, this separation technique has been used for purposes as diverse as the analysis of odour and taste problems in high-density polyethylene [93], contaminants in recycled high-impact polystyrene [94], benzene residues in recycled polyethylene terephthalate [95] and denture adhesives [96], residual toluene in medical plasters [97], and lipstick (for assignation of products to manufacturers) [98,99]. [Pg.125]

Using the data in Table V, it is possible to determine the amount of energy required and the quantity of air pollutants released per 1000 lb of production of polyethylene sacks. The results are shown in Fig. 15. At 0% recycle, polyethylene sacks (on an equal use basis, 2 polyethylene sacks per paper sack) require approximately 20% less energy than paper sacks. However, as the recycle rate increases, this difference in energy requirement decreases linearly. At recycle rates above 80% there appears to be no significant difference in energy requirements for polyethylene and... [Pg.272]

Recycling of unwanted polymers is the best solution, and six types of plastics in common use are frequently stamped with identifying codes assigned by the Society of the Plastics Industry (Table 31.2). After sorting by type, the items to be recycled are shredded into small chips, washed, dried, and melted for reuse. Soft-drink bottles, for instance, are made from recycled polyethylene terephthalate), trash bags are made from recycled low-density polyethylene, and garden furniture is made from recycled polypropylene and mixed plastics. [Pg.1278]

We have previously shown that a fiber optic equipped near-infrared spectrophotometer (NIR) can be used to measure the composition of a blend of polypropylene with recycled polyethylene. In this current work, we show the results of monitoring color in-line, rather than composition, by using the visible part of the spectrum measured from the same spectrophotometer (which we now term a Vis-NIR instrument). [Pg.142]

As PET is nonbiodegradable, recycling is an appropriate use of the resource. PET bottles have been recycled since the 1970s (Awajaa and Pavelb, 2005). However, the quality of the resulting recycled polyethylene terephthalate (RPET) depends on whether the bottles to be recycled contain contaminants including dust, colouring, acids and water (Awajaa and Pavelb, 2005). [Pg.108]

Though the overall impact result of the hemp/epoxy composite was lower than the impact of the glass/epoxy composite, the impact associated with the matrix was very high. There are two ways to reduce the impacts associated with the matrix one is using bio-based matrix, the other is using a recycled matrix. Many studies involve the use of bio-based epoxy resin in thermoset composites, while recycled polypropylene and recycled polyethylene have been studied in new thermoplastic formulations. [Pg.315]

Properties of some plastic waste are similar to those made from virgin materials, with tests indicating only a slight change in mechanical properties of recycled polyethylene [56]. Products manufactured from plastic waste are increasing and include fiber-reinforced plastic composites (FRPCs) [57]. FRPCs made with waste wood fiber/flour have also gained popularity due to the low cost of recycled wood to the manufacturers. [Pg.335]
