He can t, I said. I am apprenticed to a sage, clairvoyant, alchemist, astrologer, and all-round philosopher, who also happens to be personal physician to the doge. If I ever need a degree in medicine, I shall go over to Padua and foresee all the answers in the finals before the professors have thought of the questions. I stalked across to the medical cupboard. Plaster, master ... [Pg.37]

Liniments Liniments are external preparations of a consistency thicker than water, but thinner than ointments, usually applied to the skin with a gentle rubbing of the hands. Liniments are among the oldest of dosage forms, along with related forms, such as plasters and ointments. The term came to its present use about 1600. Drying liniments are preparations which dry when smeared on the skin, forming a medicated film removable by water. [Pg.960]

In the industrial field, this separation technique has been used for purposes as diverse as the analysis of odour and taste problems in high-density polyethylene [93], contaminants in recycled high-impact polystyrene [94], benzene residues in recycled polyethylene terephthalate [95] and denture adhesives [96], residual toluene in medical plasters [97], and lipstick (for assignation of products to manufacturers) [98,99]. [Pg.125]

Calcium sulphate pellets impregnated with tobramycin are now available in a ready prepared pack and can be used with deep, severely infected ulcers in combination with systemic antibiotic treatment. The Osteoset T (Wright Medical) is a prefabricated plaster of parts pellet impregnated with tobramycin and the Bone Void Filler is available as a mixing kit allowing fabrication of pellets of various sizes and strengths. Following application the pellets remain in place and are reabsorbed over a 2-3-month period. [Pg.232]

Products and Uses Applications include baked goods, condiments, horseradish flavor (imitation), meat, mustard oil (artificial), pickles, salad dressings, and sauces as a flavoring agent. Also found in mustard plasters and over-the-counter medications and in fumigants. [Pg.40]

An early toxicology text describes a series of 379 cases of poisoning due to belladonna preparations (eye drops, plasters, and liniments) (Witthaus 1911). A review article on belladonna notes that medical use of belladonna has declined significantly, and such poisonings have become rare (Lee 2007). [Pg.113]

The earliest references to pressure sensitive adhesive materials probably date to the medical plasters (i.e. single dressings) first devised in the early decades of the 1800s. These dressings were often a combination of a natural rubber PSA and a medication impregnated onto a bandage material. [Pg.465]

In this work, biotextile antinucrobial medical plasters have been designed and developed by using the following two methods ... [Pg.31]

A plaster type non-elastic bandage, Unna s boot is favoured in the USA. However, compression would be achieved by three-layer dressing that consists of Unna s boot, continuous gauze dressing followed by an outer layer of elastic wrap. It should be stressed that Unna s boot, being rigid, is uncomfortable to wear and medical professionals are unable to monitor the ulcers after the boot is applied. [Pg.281]

Alpha-hemihydrate gypsum plaster has a distinctly lower water requirement than plaster of Paris and—at an equal consistency of the starting mix—exhibits a distinctly higher final strength. It is used in applications in which a high strength of the hardened material is essential, as in medical and dental applications, and in the production of molds for the ceramic industry. [Pg.196]

Charles Stanley Gibson (Manchester, 8 February 1884-London, 24 March 1950) worked with W. J. Pope on the resolution of benzoylalanine and on alkyl derivatives of gold (see p. 852) and dichlorodiethyl sulphide (see p. 453). He was professor in Madras, Cairo, and Guy s Hospital Medical School. He worked on organic arsenic and gold compounds, the setting of plaster of Paris, etc. ... [Pg.857]
