Recognition systems

Each supervisor should provide frequent positive reinforcement of work practices to employees. This informal discussion gauges whether training is effective and reinforces desired safe behaviors. Some worksites also provide special recognition for the use of safe work practices. Some supervisors periodically pass out various types of safety cards that can be redeemed for a free cup of coffee or soft drink, or a jacket, key chain, shirt, etc. Other supervisors periodically observe individual employees at their tasks and provide oral and/or written feedback on what was done safely [2]. 

Rewarding safe behavior is at least as important as correcting and punishing unsafe behavior. Positive feedback can be a powerful motivator. It is important to recognize self-initiated acts of safety protection— those times when employees, of their own accord, act to protect themselves or others [2]. After all, most people like to be praised for the work they do. 

Recognitions based on the least number of incidents can do more harm than good. These types of recognition tend to create pressure on employees to avoid reporting incidents. For the best results, emphasize the positive recognize employees for their constructive, positive safety efforts. 

A disciplinary system is one of the keys to successfully implementing a management system. It can help to make sure that your rules and working practices are taken seriously by all employees and are followed. It lets employees know how you expect them to operate in relation to the goals of the management system and safety program. The discipline 

A disciplinary system does not exist only to punish employees. The purpose should be to control the work environment so that employees are protected from incidents. A disciplinary system helps to make sure that safety is consistent by letting employees know what is expected of them. It provides employees with an opportunity to correct at-risk behaviors before an incident occurs [2].

Also databases of scientific literature (such as PUBMED, MEDLINE) provide additional functionality, e.g. they can search for similar articles based on word-usage analysis. Text recognition systems are being developed that automatically extract knowledge about protein function from the abstracts of scientific articles, notably on protein-protein interactions.

For example, kitchen or bathroom scales could be equipped with fingerprint recognition systems, thus giving access only to a limited number of users. Bathroom scales could also have a voice recognition system with a limited vocabulary, and for limited applications.

The sensors discussed so far are based on ligands covalently bound to the polymer backbone. Other methods of detection - often referred to as mix and detect methods - work by simple noncovalent incorporation of the polymer with the ligand of interest. Reichert et al. generated liposomes of polydiacetylene with sialic acid for the same purpose of detection as Charych s surface-bound polymers, but realized that covalent functionalization of the polymer was not necessary [17]. Through simple mixing of the lipid-bound sialic acid with the polymer before sonication and liposome formation, they were able to form a functional colorimetric recognition system (Fig. 8).
