Surface catalytic reaction

The surface work fiincdon is fonnally defined as the minimum energy needed m order to remove an electron from a solid. It is often described as being the difference in energy between the Fenni level and the vacuum level of a solid. The work ftmction is a sensitive measure of the surface electronic structure, and can be measured in a number of ways, as described in section B 1.26.4. Many processes, such as catalytic surface reactions or resonant charge transfer between ions and surfaces, are critically dependent on the work ftmction. [Pg.300]

A tremendous amount of work has been done to delineate the detailed reaction mechanisms for many catalytic reactions on well characterized surfaces [1, 45]. Many of tiiese studies involved impinging molecules onto surfaces at relatively low pressures, and then interrogating the surfaces in vacuum with surface science teclmiques. For example, a usefiil technique for catalytic studies is TPD, as the reactants can be adsorbed onto the sample in one step, and the products fonned in a second step when the sample is heated. Note that catalytic surface studies have also been perfonned by reacting samples in a high-pressure cell, and then returning them to vacuum for measurement. [Pg.302]

Recently, in situ studies of catalytic surface chemical reactions at high pressures have been undertaken [46, 47]. These studies employed sum frequency generation (SFG) and STM in order to probe the surfaces as the reactions are occurring under conditions similar to those employed for industrial catalysis (SFG is a laser-based teclmique that is described in section A 1.7.5.5 and section BT22). These studies have shown that the highly stable adsorbate sites that are probed under vacuum conditions are not necessarily tlie same sites that are active in high-pressure catalysis. One problem with heterogeneous catalysis is that the solid catalyst is easily poisoned. From the study of the influencing of single reactions by products and by other added substances and from the analysis of mutual influencing of reactions in coupled systems, the following conclusions can be drawn concerning adsorption of the reaction components. (1) With the exception of crotyl alcohol on the platinum-iron-silica gel catalyst, all the substances present in the coupled system, i.e. reactants, intermediate products, and final products, always adsorbed on the same sites of the catalytic surface (competitive adsorption). When the selectivity of a reaction is controlled by differences in the way molecules are activated on different sites, the probability of the presence of different sites becomes important. An example again can be taken from the activation of CO. For methanation, activation of the CO bond is essential. This will proceed with low barriers at step-edge-type sites. If one is interested in the production of methanol, catalytic surfaces are preferred, which do not allow for easy CO dissociation. This will typically be the case for terrace sites. Catalytic reactors can roughly be classified as random and structured reactors. In random reactors, catalyst particles are located in a chaotic way in the reaction zone, no matter how carefully they are packed. It is not surprising that this results in a nonuniform fiow over the cross-section of the reaction zone, leading to a nonuniform access of reactants to the outer catalyst surface and, as a consequence, undesired concentration and temperature profiles. Not surprisingly, this leads, in general, to lower yield and selectivity. In structured reactors, the catalyst is of a well-defined spatial structure, which can be designed in more detail. The performance of various solvents can be explained with the help of the role of these solvents in the reaction. These solvents help in keeping teth benzene and hydrogen peroxide in one phase. This helps in the easy transport of both the reactants to the active sites of the catalyst. In Chapter 1 we emphasized that the properties of a heterogeneous catalyst surface are determined by its composition and structure on the atomic scale. Hence, from a fundamental point of view, the ultimate goal of catalyst characterization should be to examine the surface atom by atom under the reaction conditions under which the catalyst operates, i.e. in situ. However, a catalyst often consists of small particles of metal, oxide, or sulfide on a support material. Chemical promoters may have been added to the catalyst to optimize its activity and/or selectivity, and structural promoters may have been incorporated to improve the mechanical properties and stabilize the particles against sintering. As a result, a heterogeneous catalyst can be quite complex. Moreover, the state of the catalytic surface generally depends on the conditions under which it is used. [Pg.129]

We have already mentioned that fundamental studies in catalysis often require the use of single crystals or other model systems. As catalyst characterization in academic research aims to determine the surface composition on the molecular level under the conditions where the catalyst does its work, one can in principle adopt two approaches. The first is to model the catalytic surface, for example with that of a single crystal. By using the appropriate combination of surface science tools, the desired characterization on the atomic scale is certainly possible in favorable cases. However, although one may be able to study the catalytic properties of such samples under realistic conditions (pressures of 1 atm or higher), most of the characterization is necessarily carried out in ultrahigh vacuum, and not under reaction conditions. [Pg.166]
