Apart from the use of this approach to study the ecotoxicology of neurotoxic pollutants in the field, it also has potential for use during the course of environmental risk assessment. We have already mentioned that fundamental studies in catalysis often require the use of single crystals or other model systems. As catalyst characterization in academic research aims to determine the surface composition on the molecular level under the conditions where the catalyst does its work, one can in principle adopt two approaches. The first is to model the catalytic surface, for example with that of a single crystal. By using the appropriate combination of surface science tools, the desired characterization on the atomic scale is certainly possible in favorable cases. However, although one may be able to study the catalytic properties of such samples under realistic conditions (pressures of 1 atm or higher), most of the characterization is necessarily carried out in ultrahigh vacuum, and not under reaction conditions. [Pg.166]

The zinc hydroxo form is shown to catalyze the hydration reaction and only the aquo complex catalyzes the dehydration of bicarbonate. Kinetic data including second order rate constants were discussed in reference to other model systems and the enzyme carbonic anhy-drase.459 The zinc complex of the tetraamine 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane (cyclen) was also studied as a catalyst for these reactions in aqueous solution and comparison of activity suggests formation of a bidentate bicarbonate intermediate inhibits the catalytic activity. This discussion of copper-containing enzymes has focused on structure and function information for Type I blue copper proteins azurin and plastocyanin, Type III hemocyanin, and Type II superoxide dismutase s structure and mechanism of activity. Information on spectral properties for some metalloproteins and their model compounds has been included in Tables 5.2, 5.3, and 5.7. One model system for Type I copper proteins39 and one for Type II centers40 have been discussed. Many others can be found in the literature. Correlation of Certain Proteases with Metastatic Potential in Model Tumor Systems. A variety of different proteases have been found to correlate with metastatic potential in model tumor systems. Many of these early studies were carried out with B16 mouse melanoma cells. Variants of these cells with different metastatic potential have been selected. In separate experiments, total PA activity, CB activity, and collagenase IV activity have all been found to correlate with metastatic potential in these cells (A4, D6). More recently, levels of mRNA for CB have also been found to correlate with metastasis in these melanoma cells (Ql). After exposing the model catalysts to CO molecules by molecular beam pulses with typical widths of 40 ms (resulting in maximal effective pressures of 2 X 10 mbar) and at a constant isotropic O2 pressure of 5 x 10 mbar, the resulting product molecules (CO2) were detected within isothermal conditions by an absolutely calibrated quadrupole mass spectrometer. From the integral of the detected CO2 pulses, the absolute number of formed CO2 per cluster could be obtained. Dividing this number by the reaction time (40 ms) and the number of atoms in the clusters results in the TOFs of this reaction for various cluster sizes with an estimated accuracy of 10%. From these results, a reaction probability can then be defined by dividing the TOF by the total flux of CO (composed of the direct adsorption or adsorption through reverse spillover) on the cluster. With these two numbers, a catalytic process is defined and allows the cluster s catalytic properties to be compared to other model systems. [Pg.148]

The capped porphyrins prepared by Baldwin et al. [56, 57] are other model systems designed to test the consequences of steric hindrance on CO binding (Scheme 4). These compounds were reported to discriminate against dioxygen in favor of carbon monoxide [62, 119-121].
