Support for this last lesson comes from several sources. Independent review of FRA operations by the GAO has repeatedly drawn attention to the ineffectiveness of pursuing individual defects and has recommended that the FRA move toward conducting more in-depth investigations of the safety-management practices of railroads who appear to offer deficient levels of safety. Interviews with managers of short-line railroads in Railway Age suggest that they find the educational seminars and advice offered by the FRA in cooperation with ASLRRA to be more informative and useful than a stack of violation notices written by a FRA inspector during a random visit. [Pg.164]

It wasn t an easy journey. The Trans-Siberian Railway did not yet exist. Fifteen years previously a large network of railroads had been proposed, but Russia s minister of finance, who believed that rail travel was a threat to public morals, rejected the idea. Railroads, he said, encouraged frequent purposeless travel, thus fostering the restless spirit of our age. ... [Pg.160]

K roly Hoffmann discovered in 1874 clefts filled with red clay in a quarry on the northern slope of M szkohegy (Templomhegy), the most easternly peak of the Villdny mountains ( the quarry opposite to the railway station ). Later, Loczy, Jr. collected from the large quarry on the ridge of the hill (then called the quarry of Prince Frederick ). Kormos had worked for 30 years on the material of various clefts and finally Kretzoi (1953-1955) and myself (from 1975) have carried out excavations. Of the 11 Villany localities listed by Kretzoi (1956), nos. 3, 5 and 11 will be discussed here because of their relevant age. [Pg.31]

St. James The English name was calculated to appeal to the American colonist export market back in the 18th century — they even use the square bottles more characteristic of Scotches and gins. St. James products offer some of the best value for money, especially the boxed Hors D Age. Located on the Atlantic coast near Sainte-Marie, it also offers one of the more thorough tourism experiences. The mill and distillery are authentic. The efficacy of polyurethane and styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) as binders for ground rubber prepared from waste tires was compared to a formulation of a compound developed without binder. Without binder, the effect of both sulfur and accelerator content on tensile properties are studied, as well as the effect of ageing on these properties [29]. The suggested uses of the unbound product include rubber blocks, and ballast mats for railway applications. [Pg.185]

The modelling of railway suicides is statistically based, and split into suicides at stations, suicides at level crossings and suicides at other locations. The model considers the size of the local population, characteristics of the local population such as gender, age profile, income and employment levels, health deprivation and disability, education, housing and crime. The model also takes into account train frequency and speed and features of the station such as ticket barriers, presence of staff and CCTV. [Pg.1640]

The first researches in reliability engineering in connection with today s mathematical term started at the beginning of the industrial age. A complete study of the lifespan of a roller bearing was documented as part of a technical railway development. The law of Robert Lusser describes a chain of elements, where the total reliability occurs from the product of the individual reliabilities. This describes the foundation for reliability of... [Pg.43]
