More complicated pyrolysis process occurs for poly[di(ethylene glycol) adipate]. This polymer contains two types of C-0 bonds that can be cleaved by pyrolysis. The results for a Py-GC/MS analysis of a poly[di(ethylene glycol) adipate] sample are shown in Figure 10.1.4. The polymer has CAS 9010-98-3 and the idealized formula [-0CH2CH20CH2CH202C(CH2)4C0-]n. The pyrolysis, separation, and peak identification were done similarly to the other examples previously discussed (see Table 4.2.2). As a result of the development of electronic applications for NF, higher purities of NF have been required, and considerable work has been done to improve the existing manufacturing and purification processes (29). N2F2 is removed by pyrolysis over heated metal (30) or metal fluoride (31). This purification step is carried out at temperatures between 200—300°C which is below the temperature at which NF is converted to N2F4. Moisture, N2O, and CO2 are removed by adsorption on 2eohtes (29,32). WulffProcess. The regenerative technique is best exemplified by the Wulff process, Hcensed by Union Carbide Corp. The furnace consists basically of two masses of high purity alumina refractory tile having cylindrical channels for gas flow and separated by a central combustion space as shown in Figure 10. Its cychc operation has four distinct steps, each of approximately 1 min in duration, the sequence being pyrolysis and heat in one direction followed by pyrolysis and heat in the other direction. Combination techniques such as microscopy—ftir and pyrolysis—ir have helped solve some particularly difficult separations and complex identifications. Both normal and grazing angle modes can be used to identify components (23). Reversed-phase hplc has been used to separate PPG into its components using evaporative light scattering and uv detection of their 3,5-dinitroben2oyl derivatives. Xylenes. The main appHcation of xylene isomers, primarily p- and 0-xylenes, is in the manufacture of plasticizers and polyester fibers and resins. Demands for xylene isomers and other aromatics such as benzene have steadily been increasing over the last two decades. The major source of xylenes is the catalytic reforming of naphtha and the pyrolysis of naphtha and gas oils. A significant amount of toluene and Cg aromatics, which have lower petrochemical value, is also produced by these processes. More valuable p- or 0-xylene isomers can be manufactured from these low value aromatics in a process complex consisting of transalkylation, eg, the Tatoray process and Mobil s toluene disproportionation (M lDP) and selective toluene disproportionation (MSTDP) processes isomerization, eg, the UOP Isomar process (88) and Mobil s high temperature isomerization (MHTI), low pressure isomerization (MLPI), and vapor-phase isomerization (MVPI) processes (89) and xylene isomer separation, eg, the UOP Parex process (90). [Pg.52]

The separation train of the plant is designed to recover important constituents present in the furnace effluent. The modem olefin plant must be designed to accommodate various feedstocks, ie, it usually is designed for feedstock flexibiUty in both the pyrolysis furnaces and the separation system (52). Chemical recovery ia sodium-based sulfite pulpiag is more complicated, and a large number of processes have been proposed. The most common process iavolves liquor iaciaeration under reduciag conditions to give a smelt, which is dissolved to produce a kraft-type green liquor. Sulfide is stripped from the liquor as H2S after the pH is lowered by CO2. The H2S is oxidized to sulfur ia a separate stream by reaction with SO2, and the sulfur is subsequendy burned to reform SO2. Alternatively, ia a pyrolysis process such as SCA-Bidemd, the H2S gas is burned direcdy to SO2. A rather novel approach is the Sonoco process, ia which alumina is added to the spent liquors which are then burned ia a kiln to form sodium aluminate. In anther method, used particulady ia neutral sulfite semichemical processes, fluidized-bed combustion is employed to give a mixture of sodium carbonate and sodium sulfate, which can be sold to kraft mills as makeup chemical. [Pg.274]

Mixtures can be identified with the help of computer software that subtracts the spectra of pure compounds from that of the sample. For complex mixtures, fractionation may be needed as part of the analysis. Commercial instmments are available that combine ftir, as a detector, with a separation technique such as gas chromatography (gc), high performance Hquid chromatography (hplc), or supercritical fluid chromatography (96,97). Instmments such as gc/ftir are often termed hyphenated instmments (98). Pyrolyzer (99) and thermogravimetric analysis (tga) instmmentation can also be combined with ftir for monitoring pyrolysis and oxidation processes (100) (see Analytical methods, hyphenated instruments). [Pg.315]

Alternatives to oxychlorination have also been proposed as part of a balanced VCM plant. In the past, many vinyl chloride manufacturers used a balanced ethylene—acetylene process for a brief period prior to the commercialization of oxychlorination technology. Addition of HCl to acetylene was used instead of ethylene oxychlorination to consume the HCl made in EDC pyrolysis. Since the 1950s, the relative costs of ethylene and acetylene have made this route economically unattractive. Another alternative is HCl oxidation to chlorine, which can subsequently be used in dkect chlorination (131). The SheU-Deacon (132), Kel-Chlor (133), and MT-Chlor (134) processes, as well as a process recently developed at the University of Southern California (135) are among the available commercial HCl oxidation technologies. Each has had very limited industrial appHcation, perhaps because the equiHbrium reaction is incomplete and the mixture of HCl, O2, CI2, and water presents very challenging separation, purification, and handling requkements. HCl oxidation does not compare favorably with oxychlorination because it also requkes twice the dkect chlorination capacity for a balanced vinyl chloride plant. Consequently, it is doubtful that it will ever displace oxychlorination in the production of vinyl chloride by the balanced ethylene process. [Pg.422]

Petroleum-derived benzene is commercially produced by reforming and separation, thermal or catalytic dealkylation of toluene, and disproportionation. Benzene is also obtained from pyrolysis gasoline formed ia the steam cracking of olefins (35). [Pg.40]

The Coastal process uses steam pyrolysis of isobutane to produce propylene and isobutylene (as weH as other cracked products). Both Mitsubishi and Mitsui TLEs differ drastically from other designs. Mitsubishi offers a TLE with an integral steam dmm and cyclone for vapor—hquid separation. The pyrolysis gas flows in the shell side, and is claimed to accomplish the decoking of the furnace and the transferline exchanger in one operation. The Mitsui quench cooler uses three concentric tubes as the tube element, and requires steam—air decoking to clean the TLE (58,59). [Pg.438]
