Refractory tiles

WulffProcess. The regenerative technique is best exemplified by the Wulff process, Hcensed by Union Carbide Corp. The furnace consists basically of two masses of high purity alumina refractory tile having cylindrical channels for gas flow and separated by a central combustion space as shown in Figure 10. Its cychc operation has four distinct steps, each of approximately 1 min in duration, the sequence being pyrolysis and heat in one direction followed by pyrolysis and heat in the other direction. Continuity of output is achieved by paired installations.

The three polymorphs of Al2C>3 Si02, sillimanite, kyanite, and andalu-site are found as ores in metamorphic rocks. Sillimanite is formed at high temperatures, above the stability range of andalusite or kyanite. At lower temperature andalusite forms at lower pressures than kyanite. All three forms are used in high-temperature porcelain products such as spark plugs, electrical insulators, refractory, tile, and acid-resistant containers such as crucibles. 

Technical Observations. Acid orange A is one of the most widely used monoazo dyes because of its low cost and bright color. In large scale preparations, the coupling reaction is done in huge pitchpine vats having a capacity of 15,000 liters or more, or in concrete vats measuring up to 40 meters across and lined with refractory tile. 

Remaining production and usage is distributed over a host of industries, many of which are not commonly known. Others include nonferrous metal producers (copper, lead, zinc, etc.), the cement industry, petroleum and hydrocarbon refineries, chemical producers, pulp and paper, food production-related industries anything involving heat and/or hot products. Although only a minor consumer, NASA utilizes refractory tiles to protect astronauts from the harsh conditions that exist on operation of the space shuttle and a refractory brick pad to manage the heat load associated with launch. 

Stack gas temperature measurements are taken to provide a basis for furnace continuous emission monitoring (CEM) and also to setup safety interlocks for emergency shutdown. Hence, accurate measurement of stack gas temperature is crucial to the operation of the furnace. The measurement location must be chosen in such a way that the bulk of the flue gases are sampled and the radiation from refractory tiles is minimal. A suction pyrometer is preferred to a thermocouple for stack gas measurement. Although not recommended, if an unshielded thermocouple is used, it must be corrected for radiative losses from the bead otherwise, the measurement would result in errors up to the order of 200°F to 400°F.

Flame type H. high velocity. Low swirl. High fomaoe ledrculalion. Flow contained by refractory tile, burning inside and outside tile. Fast mixing. Used to drive heat into loosely-piled loads to force flow around backs of loads, to enhance convection, to reach long distances and to Are between piers. 

Bat. (1) A refractory tile or slab as used, for example, to support pottery-ware while it is being fired. 

Insuloc. A system for protecting water-cooled pipes in steel reheating furnaces. An inner layer of refractory fibre is covered by a tough outer skin of interlocking refractory tiles. 

Refractory tiles with longer lifetime than conventional castable refractory materials have been developed and used high-SiC tiles and/or high-Al203 tiles are used in many cases.
