As stated, much of this book is intended to be a guideline. It should not be construed that the material presented herein is the absolute requirement for any facility. Indeed, many organizations have their own policies, standards and practices for the protection of their facilities. Portions of this book are a synopsis of common practices employed in the industry and can be referred to as such where such information is unavailable or outdated. Numerous design guidelines and specifications of major, small and independent oil companies as wen as information from engineering firms and published industry references have been reviewed to assist in its preparation. Some of the latest published practices and research into fire and explosions have also been mentioned. [Pg.297]

The seriousness of problems related to the conservation of paper is already well recognized. In about 1850, paper became much more susceptible to deterioration because of the acidic nature of the products prepared by the manufacturing processes then being introduced. Today, steps are being taken to correct and prevent problems. The Wall Street Journal of March 6,1989, reported that the publishing industry estimated... [Pg.265]

The first three of the following papers in this symposium are concerned with coupling agents. These investigations were stimulated by the reaction of an NRL team of surface chemists to the published industrial research of the past decade on glass-reinforced plastics and other composite materials. Present commercial practices still appear to involve more art than science (63), and these papers give adequate evidence that there are opportunities for both basic and applied research on the subject. [Pg.13]

Short reviews of the recent research activities into UV disinfection of water and air and of the UV treatment techniques of polluted air are enriched by the description and discussion of several selected examples of published industrial applications. Many questions related to the selection of UV processes will be answered and common pitfalls referring to UV applications addressed. [Pg.3]

Although the motivations for SAR research in academia and industry may differ, the techniques are largely the same. This is because the usual route for software development in the field is from academia to industry, with (increasingly) a commercial software vendor as a middleman. Over the years, CAMD methods have become much more sophisticated. At the same time, and largely because of commercial software, they can be much more easily and routinely applied. As a result, many published industrial applications have b me less orient towards the empirical prediction of activity, and more directed towards the study of receptor function and mechanism of action. This trend is certain to continue, since knowing the shape of a receptor or the mechanism of action of a particular compound makes it much easier to design new ones. [Pg.28]

The case studies from industry inserted below show how critical factors in additives decisions come together and are (usually) resolved. These cases are based on published industry source materials and they show how different AOs fit certain situations. Obviously, even very similar situations in the future could significantly differ from these cases thus, these stories can only at best be a guide for what kinds of benefits certain AOs may offer in a related case Additives specialists are continually developing new packages and all appropriate suppliers should be consulted for their possible heat stabilization solutions. [Pg.45]
