Uyttendaele and de Voogt consider that the ability to remember and execute specific delayed tasks without being prompted to do it, that is, prospective memory, is central for air traffic controllers and also propose its inclusion in air traffic controllers selection processes. Similarly, the suggestion follows the use of computerized tasks that try to tap distinct psychological contributions. [Pg.154]

The short summary here of Popper s and Kuhn s contributions to the philosophy of science is based, in the case of Popper, only on his early work, which emphasized logic and classified psychology as not scientific. It should be emphasized that the later work of Popper, particularly in the last two decades, demonstrates his broad and deep ideas covering much more than the philosophy of science in a narrow sense. An excellent example is his opinion on precision, as published in Popper s autobiography (1982, p. 24) The quest for precision is analogous to the quest for certainty, and both should be abandoned. .. One should never try to be more precise than the problem demands. .. It is always undesirable to make an effort to increase precision for its own sake — especially linguistic precision — since this usually leads to loss of clarity. ... [Pg.218]

The pathogenesis of rosacea is multifactorial. Vascular hyperactivity is the primary phenomenon that is complicated by inflammatory changes. Endocrine, psychological, pharmacological, immunological, infectious, thermal and alimentary factors contribute to produce vascular instability and tissue damage (Fig. 17.1). The role of Helicobacter pylori is still being discussed. [Pg.185]

Manifestoes, the Fama Fmternitatis (Kassel, 1615) and the Confessio (Kassel, 1616), declared their adherence to the reformed faith, but in the Confessio they also praised the value of the esoteric arts and placed them on the same level of importance as the Bible. Eventually they were to produce an alternative to the established Churches in a private form of spirituality. This psychological need for a personalised faith was one of the currents contributing to tbe Enlightenment project of a society based on secular values. ... [Pg.8]

The examination of individual NP case studies by other investigators, as well as summary results of our pilot research, suggest at least two clinically distinct populations. One subsample of PCP abusers has a developmental history of prenatal and birth complications, e.g., prematurity, anoxia at birth, or low APGAR scores, and of early childhood factors, e.g., CHI with loss of consciousness, febrile illnesses with or without convulsions, or chronic ear infections. These histories contribute to developmental learning and performance disorders. In this group, LD causes academic failure and frustrations, which in turn contribute to the development of psychological and interpersonal problems. [Pg.206]

In the assessment of odour production and nuisance from industrial processes the techniques are by now reasonably well established, and their accuracy and consistency are in principle known. There are major differences however between say a rendering plant on the one hand and a sewage treatment works on the other. One difference is psychological to many people an odour problem is necessarily concomitant to the existence of a sewage works. There have been instances of a well-operated sewage works built next to a tannery, where the sewage works has been almost universally blamed by irate local residents for a problem to which it has contributed in only a minor way. To this extent, for some people the only way to convince them that there is no odour nuisance would be to shut the works completely, and even then it is known that complaints can continue for some time afterwards. [Pg.144]

There is some psychologic basis to drug therapy, and the odor, taste, and color of a pharmaceutical preparation can play a part. An appropriate drug will have its most beneficial effect when it is accepted and taken properly by the patient. The proper combination of flavor, fragrance, and color in a pharmaceutical product contributes to its acceptance. [Pg.391]

Another possible reason for public interest in herbal medications is that they provide some autonomy from medical professionals. Multiple factors contribute to a person s satisfaction with medical care (Siahpush et al. 1999 Sixma et al. 1998 Kaptchuk and Eisenberg 1998). One cause of dissatisfaction results from the traditionally passive role of the patient. Independent of its efficacy, alternative medicine provides an individual with a greater range of explanations and treatment options for their illnesses. The psychological appeal of more options is sufficient to draw individuals to consult alternative medicine, especially in cases where modern medicine has not been effective. [Pg.20]
